“Amazing spot. Popped in for a pint whilst deciding what to do for dinner. I’d heard the food was good so had a Quick Look at the menu and it looked great. Ended up ordering a burger and it was proper quality. Real cheese, bun from a local bakery and meat from littlewoods . Had the house pickles as a little snack and they were delicious. A lot of the menu had a French leaning and there’s not a lot of that in town right now. Prices are good. Bavette and chips £21 and my pint of ale was four quid. In the city centre this is unbelievable. Nice people and chef popped out for a chat. People keep saying hidden gem but it’s 5 minutes from Mackie mayor! My new pub in town”

“We decided to try a different area of Manchester on our most recent visit. One of the pubs we tried was The Angel. What an amazing place, great selection of beers which they were quite happy for us to sample first. The food looked great too. We only sampled one of their pies they had on the bar. Made by a local butcher we tried a pork and black pudding. Wow probably one of the best pies I've ever had! Can't wait to visit again and I might even be brave enough to try the oysters 🤞”

“Little pub packed with history and character. Cant really say much as I only had one drink served by a lovely waitress who was very fun, cheap prices fairly cheap when other places charge an arm and a leg. The decor is wacky but I’m sure if you’re a regular you’d understand. I must say the entrance on the side of the building that leads to the beer garden is a bit unstable and probably could do with a bit of renovation and a tidy round the area itself due to loads of cobwebs on the door and flys.”

“The fish, what can I say. Do not be deterred by the exterior because the food and wine is absolutely the best Put this food on any other top end gaff and it’s £200 easy The Hake was seasoned to the absolute top level it was crispy but the flake on the fish was sensational. The Bavette, well, ive not had better What’s coming out of the Kitchen here is way more than you would expect walking in but trust me, it’s the biggest hidden gem in Manchester, FACT”

“We came here for some food and this place is a hidden gem. We got a Sunday lunch which was beef or pork, so we had one of each. The food was delicious, really well seasoned and overall, beautiful. Would definitely come back here for food and recommend as a good pub for food and a drink”

Customer Review Summary

Sunday lunch draws the most mentions, with reviewers singling out the beef and the porchetta, plus sides like celeriac purée and red cabbage, and one calling it the best roast they have had out. Close behind are the starters and bar snacks: the rarebit, described as cheesy but light, the ham hock bon bons, house pickles, and a pork and black pudding pie from a local butcher. The hake and the bavette also earn praise, and a burger with a bun from a local bakery gets a mention. Several describe the beer selection, with session ales on tap and samples offered before ordering, and a few call the prices cheap for the city centre. The dining room upstairs with a fire and candles is called cosy. Reviewers also mention the chef coming out to explain the dishes. The complaints are small: one finds the entrance to the beer garden unstable with cobwebs on the door, and another thought a tiny jug of gravy at an extra £2 was a bit tight.
