About The Freemount

The Freemount is a bar in Manchester at 28-30 Oldham St, set in a single room with bare brick walls and toucan murals. Live music plays here, with an acoustic act and Irish music on the bill. The drinks range leans Irish, with stouts and beers alongside Guinness on tap, and a Jubel pint is served at the bar. Behind it sits a spirit collection built around a large whiskey selection. Dogs are welcome, so the room works for a drink with a pet along. A queue forms at the door on busy evenings, and weekends get busier still.

Customer Review Summary

Live music draws the most praise at The Freemount, from an acoustic act and Irish music on a Tuesday night to a Sunday session one diner calls brilliant. Close behind are the drinks, with reviewers singling out Guinness on tap, a pint of Jubel, and a whiskey range that one newcomer explored through Dalwhinnie and a long chat about peat. Others mention stouts, beers, an Irish collection, and the toucan murals in a bare brick room. Bartenders are repeatedly called friendly and quick, even when busy, though one reviewer notes the pub gets crowded on weekend evenings. The main complaint comes from a regular, who says door staff let friends and acquaintances skip a queue that wrapped around the corner while everyone else waited, and who reports frequent dirty looks at the entrance. Another reviewer who needs help moving around describes a server fetching their cane and pointing out the accessible toilets.

“We visit Freemount regularly and have always enjoyed it, but lately we’ve been getting let down by some of the staffing, particularly on the door. Last week we were at the very front of the queue and didn’t end up moving from there to inside for almost 30 minutes. Normally that wouldn’t be an issue if it was just busy, but during that time we counted almost 30 people who were clearly friends or acquaintances of the door staff (mainly the lady, I think called kayla (?), who always works at the front door) being allowed to skip the queue and go straight in while everyone else waited. The queue was wrapped around the corner, and people were understandably confused and frustrated. It came across as really unprofessional and unfair. Not to mention the dirty looks the door staff are frequently giving, which doesn’t exactly make you feel welcome before you’ve even walked through the door. It’s a shame because we genuinely like Freemount and visit often, but experiences like this leave a bad impression.”

“Went to Freemount Sunday night for a few drinks. Best bar in northern quarter for sure! Even on a Sunday there were amazing vibes! Brilliant live music, great range of drinks and Tess, our Bartender, was so helpful and friendly. Definitely will be returning! 😄”

“Such a cosy gorgeous pub, was very busy when I went but it was a weekend. Had a lovely chat with Fran and one of the other bartenders who were both really friendly. Great guinness on tap”

“My first experience at this bar, very nice atmosphere and service was great. I require assistance to move around and the server named Fran was very nice helping me get up and fetching my cane. The staff were all very helpful and pointed out the accessible toilets when I entered”

“Great place, spacious however this may not be the case on a weekend evening time. Great selection of whiskeys but dies have plenty of other stouts and beers. Typically a good Irish collection.”
