About Canton Element

Canton Element is a Chinese restaurant in London, on Red Lion St, with banquette seating in the dining room and two private karaoke rooms where a party can sing. The large menu numbers its dishes and spans meat, fish and vegetarian choices. Dim sum sits alongside roast duck, including roast duck ho fun, and prawn toast is on the list too. Customer Review Summary

Dim sum anchors the praise at this Cantonese restaurant, with reviewers describing fresh dumplings, a running egg yolk bun and prawn sesame rolls. Close behind are the roast duck, fried after roasting so it is very crispy, and a roast duck ho-fun. Clay pot rice, generous fried rice portions and loose leaf tea also come up. Several point to the lunchtime and evening two-course deals as good value, and describe quick service, large portions and a chilled atmosphere where people talk without competing with music. Criticism is scattered but specific. One diner called the food average, said their early table was served after others, said empty plates sat for a while, and described a cold, rude greeting at the entrance. Another disliked the prawn, duck and squid stew, one found the sea bass weaker than other dishes, one found the room noisy, and one wished a drink was included in the price. Reviewers also note that the karaoke room charge can be offset against food and drinks.

“The food was delicious. I didn't select any of the dishes, left that to my Chinese friend. There was a good mix of dishes with meat chicken, beef, squid and fish and vegetables. Atmosphere was quite chilled people enjoyed conversations without competing with music.”

“Rude staff and a very disappointing experience. The poor service started before we even entered the restaurant. A staff member standing at the entrance did not greet us or ask how many people we had. He stared at us for like 5 seconds and coldly asked, “Are you going to finish the drink in your hand?” Even though there was barely anything left in the cup. After we were seated, things did not improve. We were one of the first tables to sit down, yet our food arrived after almost everyone else’s. The food itself was average and did not make up for the poor service. When we finished eating, our empty plates were left on the table for some time. I tried to make eye contact and ask for the bill, but the same staff member appeared to avoid us and continued serving other tables first. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was the noticeable difference in how he treated us compared with the table of four white men sitting next to us. The contrast in attitude was hard to ignore. Other staff members seemed fine, but this particular staff member, who had tattoos on his left arm, ruined the whole dining experience. I have visited this restaurant several times before, but this was by far the worst experience I have had there. I left feeling disrespected and disappointed. I would not return, and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone expecting polite, respectful and equal service.”

“Came back after so many times and they still got the ‘element’ right - fresh dim sums, generous fried rice portions and last but not least, loose leaf tea!”

“Beautiful tables and seating, swift service and great food. We ended up here after an event and thankful they would serve us as most places were closed for food. Huge menu with extensive meat, fish and veggie choices. We loved our roast duck ho-fun and beef in black bean with crispy noodles and prawn toast Seated very quickly and amazing value with starter, mains and drinks with service for £40!”
