About Bun House Chinatown

On Lisle St in London, Bun House Chinatown is a Chinese restaurant built around Cantonese buns served as small plates for sharing. Table service runs across the ground floor and the first floor. The bao come with fillings of pork, chicken, beef, duck or lamb, and the custard bun has runny custard that spills out as it is opened, so it suits a plate shared at the table. Beef chili oil fried rice sits on the menu alongside the buns, and Kaya French Toast closes the meal as a dessert. The restaurant opens daily and usually has a queue at peak times. Payment is by card only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come for the soft, fluffy buns, with the custard bun named most often as the standout, praised as soft and light, though several warn the filling is runny and spills, so they suggest pulling it apart on a plate and dipping it. The pork, chicken and beef buns follow close behind, with reviewers calling the fillings tender, tasty and spicy, and one describing a bun as filling a whole hand. Beyond the buns, the Kaya French Toast is called a great way to end a meal, and the mango iced tea gets a nod, while the shumai, beef chili oil fried rice and wonton draw only lukewarm comments next to the buns. The recurring complaint is the long queue, though several say it moves fast. Service is mixed: one reviewer describes staff who seemed annoyed by dine-in customers and forgot items, another waited around 30 minutes for dumplings after being told five minutes several times, and one found the vegetarian bun disappointing. Takeaway orders arrive in boxes with a chopstick handle that reviewers single out.

“I highly recommend the pork and chicken buns: super soft, creamy and delicate, absolutely delicious. The vegetarian option, on the other hand, was a big no for me. I think they could definitely improve that part of the menu and add more options. The custard bun is amazing — so soft and light. I super recommend it for dessert. Service was … ok. The staff seemed a bit annoyed by customers dining in and there were a few things forgotten. The guy, though, was really nice and fixed every mistake the lady made. Overall i would definitely come back! but this time just take away ;) PS: 3 buns are not enough for dinner, order more! 💗”

“Legit Asian place. Food is delicious. We ordered a bit of everything and serving is generous for tapas style. Highly recommend for both light bites / snacking and actual meals. We queued but didnt wait too long. Staff are friendly and accommodating, service also good - food served quickly. It is quite warm but gives you the real Chinatown vibe.”

“Great Chinese Bao buns in various flavors. Got the pig, chicken, and beef. Think the beef was the best. The wonton was solid but the bao is the star here. There is a long queue but it moves fast. Love the packaging and design for take away.”

“I’d seen Bun House all over social media, so I decided to give it a try. I joined the long lunchtime queue and ordered the chicken bun, beef bun, and their popular custard bun to take away. They were absolutely delicious! The takeaway was packaged in very cute boxes with a chopstick handle, which was a lovely touch. Despite the queue, my order was ready within minutes. It’s worth noting that they only accept card payments.”

“I've only had the pleasure of coming here once so far (even though I live in London 😅). However, I will be coming back here soon. I came here with my family around the time of the Lunar New Year earlier on this year so there was a magical atmosphere. We lined up in a queue of about 3 people but it was very fast service. I wouldn't say the staff were unkind. They werent "good" or "bad". Therefore I'd say the service was alright since the line went by rapidly. We all had a bao bun each (the 4 of us). If I remember correctly, two of us had the duck, one had the chicken and the last had the pork. To say that these were the best bao buns I have ever had was an understatement. They were absolutely enormous: one singular bun took up the whole of my hand. For £3.50 in London, I was expecting something I could hold with two fingers, with little filling and not much flavour. This was far from it. The buns were piping hot and deliciously soft and the meat was so tender, it melted in your mouth. I've been thinking about these buns for a long time now, wondering when I'll be back there to experience that delectable bao bun again. Overall, I cannot recommend this place more. Great value for money, generous portions and seating areas outside.”
