About New China
At 48 Gerrard St in London, New China is a Chinese restaurant with on-site KTV rooms, so a meal can end with singing. The menu draws on dishes from several regions of mainland China. From Sichuan come hot pot and boiled fish in chilli, and from Beijing comes Peking duck. The kitchen also cooks dishes from Guangdong and the Northeast, so the range extends beyond one regional style. Diners can order a full table of dishes, then move to a KTV room when they finish eating. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Ma po tofu is the dish reviewers return to most, described as flavorful with just the right spiciness, and one diner calls it a favorite that the kitchen absolutely nailed. Close behind are the sizzling pepper beef with its balance of black pepper, the dry fried spicy prawns, pork dumplings, and smoked noodles that one reviewer calls the biggest surprise. Fried rice, chicken cashew, wontons, egg with Chinese chives, and sweet and sour fish also draw praise. Several describe friendly, attentive servers, and one helped a diner choose a lotus root dish and alter the spice. Portions are called generous, and the outdoor seating is described as relaxed. The main caveat is cost. A few note that it is not cheap, though one ties this to inflation and the central London location, and another finds it good value. One reviewer found the spring rolls a little small. When the restaurant was packed and food ran late, one table was treated to a round of beer on the house.

“The staff were welcoming. Luckily it was not busy as we came in when it opened. Ordered a few dishes. Ma po tofu was just right with spiciness and it was flavorful. Fried rice was good, chicken cashew and wontons were also all good/tasty. Prices in London have hiked up with inflation, plus the location is slap bang in Central London. The price is expected to be a little more. Overall, we enjoyed the food served. Thank you!”

“We are here with our two picky teenage girls. We all loved the food and the very friendly staff. We sat outside and the atmosphere was relaxed. I took the Sizzling pepper beef which was so delicious with the perfect balance of black pepper. We will definitely come back in the future. Worth the money.”

“The food was delicious and is highly recommended. Since we had to wait a little while for the food to be ready, we were treated to a round of beer on the house. The place was packed, which accounted for the brief wait. Our waiter, Kenny, was super friendly and attentive. A wonderful spot to eat if you want to sit outside. Our waiter's name was Kenny. He was very nice and friendly. Thanks and best regards from Berlin.”

“Whilst not cheap (is eating out cheap any more?) the food was excellent. The dry fried spicy prawns were amazing. Egg with Chinese chives was good as was the sweet and sour fish. Spring rolls were a little small however.”
