About Canton
Canton is a Chinese restaurant in London, at 11 Newport Pl, built around Cantonese roast meats. Char siu, crispy pork belly and soy chicken come from the roast counter, and lai fun, a translucent rice noodle, is served with roast meat in a clear broth for a lighter bowl. Roast duck is offered on rice, and a combo rice pairs it with char siu. From the wok, the menu includes dry fried beef ho fun, and dim sum adds prawn and pork dumplings alongside a steamed custard bun. Fujian fried rice rounds out the rice dishes.

Customer Review Summary
Roast meats lead the praise, especially roast duck with crispy skin and juicy meat, served on rice or paired with char siu in a combo reviewers describe as glossy and honey-glazed. Close behind is the dry fried beef ho fun, noted for its wok hei, and the roast meat lai fun in a clear broth, which one reviewer says is not often found in London. Also named are sizzling beef with black pepper, spicy aubergine, Fujian fried rice, prawn dumplings, braised pork knuckle rice, and stir-fried pork intestines with green chillies, which one diner says is done so well that even those not into offal would enjoy it. Portions are repeatedly called generous, and several describe the food as authentic and comforting, reminiscent of Hong Kong. Service is called friendly and efficient, one reviewer calling it a bit Hong Kong style. The caveats are small: the room can be crowded, and one reviewer found the cold sliced beef slightly too spicy. One group that arrived late for its booking, having pre-ordered on the train, was told by their server they still had plenty of time.

“Fantastic food and lovely service! The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and were happy to recommend dishes. Everything we tried was delicious and the portions were very generous. We had a mixed dim sum platter (the prawn ones were my favourite), crispy duck pancakes, and the absolute highlight - the sizzling beef with black pepper, which was fantastic! The restaurant was also very busy with local Asian customers, which is always a great sign of authentic and good-quality food. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Chinatown. P.S. Don’t let the older reviews put you off! I believe many of the lower ratings are from when the restaurant had a different owner, because our experience was completly fantastic.”

“I enjoyed eating here, always doubted to give it a try because of how crowded the place can be. Got the crispy chili beef, the sweet and sour chicken, the egg fried rice and the triple bbq combo char siu/soy chicken and crispy pork belly. All dishes were good portion sizes and felt full. Flavours are good and was not disappointed. Dont be afraid of the customer service, it’s a bit hongkong style so efficient and fast 😄”

“A great Cantonese meal in Chinatown. The roast meat lai fun was definitely the highlight. Lai fun is a traditional rice noodle from Guangzhou with a smooth, slightly chewy texture that pairs perfectly with a light, clear broth. It’s not something you come across very often in London, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it here. The braised pork knuckle rice was also excellent—rich, tender and full of flavour. I’ll definitely be back”

“You know a restaurant is doing something right when it’s been around for over 70 years. Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, Canton is a long-standing favourite serving both dim sum and classic Cantonese dishes. Better yet, most dishes are under £15, making it one of the best-value Chinese restaurants in Central London. 🍽️ Dry Fried Beef Ho Fun A generous portion with plenty of wok hei—the smoky aroma that comes from a proper high-heat stir-fry. 🍽️ Roast Duck on Rice Crispy skin with tender, juicy duck served over rice. A simple but satisfying lunch that’s hard to beat for the price. 🍽️ Spicy Aubergine A Sichuan classic with the perfect balance of sweet, savoury, tangy and gentle heat. The aubergine and bamboo shoots are packed with flavour. 🍽️ Prawn & Pork Bean Curd Rolls Bean curd rolls filled with bouncy prawns and juicy pork, served in a light savoury sauce that keeps every bite succulent.”

“Walking in and seeing their 70th-anniversary history display, I realized Canton Restaurant has been anchoring this community since 1955. It is far more than just a place to eat; it's a living testament to the history, resilience, and monumental contributions of the Chinese diaspora in London. The menu is wonderfully diverse. You can get comforting dim sum for around £5, alongside excellent Cantonese roast meats and rare, authentic Hakka-style dishes. Every bite feels like a home-cooked meal. What truly sets Canton apart is the incredible team culture. The staff—representing a beautiful cultural blend of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and beyond—are exceptionally welcoming and deeply united. Their service is full of warmth, making you feel like part of the family. If you want to experience a restaurant with true historical depth, immense community pride, and delicious food, this is the absolute best spot in Chinatown!”
