About Widow Cullens Well

Widow Cullens Well is a pub in Lincoln at 29 Steep Hill, and it runs a no-mobiles rule, with board games and puzzles to play instead. The kitchen serves fish and chips and liver and mash, and the bar pours Sam Smith's Stout. Guests who want a game with their drink can settle in at the tables and play. Upstairs, a second bar and a seating area by the window give the pub another place to sit.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints centre on service. Two reviewers describe a rude bartender, one on a Saturday night and one at the change of shift, where a staff member handed over drinks aggressively. One diner says a Sunday meal was missed because food service had ended. Another reports that the chef was said to be cooking a special of goujons and chips, but the meal arrived with overcooked vegetables, a soggy Yorkshire pudding and dried out chicken. Staff offered no fix, and the family left with only a bag of crisps.

“A great place for food and drink: I particularly recommend the liver and mash! The 'no mobiles' rule makes a pleasant change. Great staff with prompt service and excellent value for money.”

“I was in on Saturday night and had a meal with my partner and the lady behind the bar was extremely rude and unpleasant. She had short hair and because of her we will not be returning. Such a shame as the food was lovely!”

“Chantelle cheerfully offered helpful ideas and was great with further whatsapp communication when I organised a recent informal celebration function at The Widow Cullen's Well. The location towards the top of steep hill was great and the venue somewhat away from the typical hen-night type raucousness further down the hill; which we wanted to avoid instead in a more mature environment on this Saturday evening. On the day of the event Chantelle was pleasant and welcomed us to the lovely upstairs lounge-like section which she had closed-off for our use only. The upstairs bar was really good and offered some privacy for our guests and removed the need to otherwise traverse the stairs too often. Chantelle provided the cold buffet catering option exactly as we had agreed previously. The presentation and quality of the food was excellent and absolutely the best value I could find at the many Bailgate / Steep Hill establishments I had earlier surveyed; before choosing this location above all others! Chantelle left us later in the capable hands of her attentive staff who were great in continuing the fun atmosphere to the end of the evening. Overall The Widow Cullen's Well, Chantelle and her team were brilliant and I recommend them.”

“Absolutely lovely place to sit and have a chat with friends. Being an no tech pub it encourages visitors to play a board game with friends or enjoy a meal or a drink in the cosy homey feeling pub serving delicious food and drinks with really friendly bar staff I reccomend sitting upstairs by the window to get some natural light while enjoying a meal or a game with your compadres”
