Customer Review Summary

Generous, homemade-tasting portions are what most reviewers return for, with the homemade pie and a T-bone steak served with a full salad singled out. Close behind come friendly, helpful staff who found tables for walk-ins on busy evenings, and a country pub setting with low beams that a couple of reviewers call very good value. Not every plate landed. One diner found the chicken overcooked and dry, two in another party found the lamb chops more fat than meat, and a breaded plaice was called a bit stodgy. The sharpest complaint came from a reviewer whose large glass of Rioja tasted sour and old. The server sent them to the bar while dinner went cold, and the barmaid talked about a refund when they had only asked for a merlot or Shiraz instead. One reviewer recommends booking because the pub fills up. Dogs were welcomed, and children played in the woodland park in the garden.

“First time back after many years living away from the area. Great food good size portions and friendly staff. Not sure if the ownership has remained the same since our last visit but still very high standards”

“We came across this little gem when we were looking for a spot of lunch while travelling down south. Service was exceptional, staff were friendly and helpful and the food was great. Lovely weather seated outside while the kids played in the woodland park in the garden.”

“We came for dinner on a Saturday evening. My husband had T-bone steak which was great. Alongside the steak came a full salad which was plentiful. I had Hunter's chicken which was only okay. The chicken was overcooked and rather dry. However my baked potato was delicious and my side salad was a tasty extra. My main problem on this evening was the fact that I'd ordered a large glass of Rioja which really didn't hit the spot. The flavour was not good - a bit sour and a bit old-tasting. I wondered whether the bottle had been open for a while and the wine had gone off. I asked the server if it could be replaced. The server took the wine away then returned asking me to go to the bar to explain fully (meanwhile my dinner was sitting on the table going cold). The barmaid seemed to have difficulty understanding that I was unhappy with the wine and said she could not give a refund. I had not mentioned a refund - I had asked if I could have the equivalent amount of merlot or Shiraz in place of the Rioja that I was unhappy with. The barmaid could have made this such an easy process but I felt as if I had to labour the point in order to receive the service that I expected. A shy person would have caved, said "it doesn't matter" and sat back down. I'm sure it would have ruined their experience. Luckily I'm not that shy person and am happy to ask for what I feel should be given to an unhappy customer. I have worked in customer service for 25 years and was taught that keeping the customer happy is paramount. A returning customer is a happy customer. Castle of Comfort, please take note.”

“What a gem this place is. We were staying nearby and everyone had written in the guest book about this pub and they werent wrong. Such a lovely, welcoming pub. The bar staff were very helpful in finding us a table as even though it was mid week we handnt booked and it was busy. We had a dog with us who was also welcome and they accommodated us with ease. The food!! Lovely big portions and you could tell it was all homemade, and nice and hot and fresh. Im just sad we dont have this pub where i live. Would definitely reccomend it far and wide 😍💕”
