About The Abbey Inn, Byland
The Abbey Inn, Byland is a gastropub in York, set in a nineteenth-century inn opposite Byland Abbey with rooms for overnight stays. Chef Director Tommy Banks created the seasonal menu, which draws on locally sourced ingredients including beef and venison. Mains include dexter steak, and the Sunday lunch of beef and pork comes with gravy, with cauliflower cheese as an extra. A Guinness sundae sits on the dessert menu. The drinks list runs from real ales to seasonal cocktails. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are about value. Several diners found portions small and the price high, with a service charge added. One left hungry after a lasagne that looked unappetising, and another found the side vegetables undercooked and the porchetta drowned in salsa verde. The Guinness sundae and doughnuts were called dull, and the brownie tasted almost stale. One server offered to take back the tough beef or bring a steak knife.

“Sunday lunch - lovely pub, great location, friendly service. Good pint of golden ale and the wine pairing with the beef was great but.... if I'm being totally honest the beef was a bit tough and I thought the cauliflower cheese was a little burnt on top, also the gravy for the beef and the pork was the same which I thought was odd (nice gravy though) not terrible and all v tasty but at £32 plus extra for the cauli cheese it needs to be perfect. The waitress offered to take the food back or provide a steak knife which was good service. I didn't do either. Not desperate to go back, might try the sister property (black swan) just up the road next time we're in the area, don't let this review put you off, it was good, just honest feedback.”

“Our annual visit for the best Sunday lunch in the land. I am a wheelchair user and the staff couldn’t have been more attentive and caring, both before and during our visit. The meal itself was superb, as was the service. The perfect way to celebrate my birthday!”

“My wife and I just spent a night in one of the rooms and had a meal last night and breakfast this morning. The experience from.start to finish was amazing. The food was excellent. I had the dexter steak for my main and my wife had the rolled pork belly. Both were excellent. Breakfast was outstanding too. Full English went down a storm and the home made yoghurt was amazing. A massive thank you to the staff for their hospitality. You were all amazing. The young curly haired ginger girl (sorry I didn't catch your name) was on it from the start and made the whole experience perfect. Thank you all !!!!”

“Came for a birthday dinner, the food was amazing with interesting flavours, and very good service. Beautiful location and venue. The home made gooseberry ice tea, steak, and cheesecake were delicious and fresh. The ingredients are all very local. The drinks also have reed straws so they do not get soggy. Would definitely come again.”
