Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the history of what several call the oldest pub in York, with its beams, several rooms to sit in and a courtyard and beer gardens outside. Fish and chips draw the clearest praise, called excellent and delicious, with steak and ale pie also rated very good and vegan options mentioned among the comfort food. Close behind, many describe friendly, helpful staff and a lovely, traditional look and feel. Service is the recurring complaint. One reviewer says staff were rude and dismissive and left after waiting at a table for service, going to another restaurant instead. Another describes a long wait for a dirty table to be cleared. A third finds the Greene King line up behind the bar lacking, though a couple of decent ciders were on, and one diner expected more atmosphere and found it looked like a normal pub. Several note the small entrance from the main street is easy to miss, and one reviewer says the place filled up quickly toward lunchtime, with the crowd adding to the energy.

“What an incredible place, rich in York’s history and full of character. The food was excellent, the service outstanding, and the beer gardens were a highlight. It’s truly a must‑visit when in York. Don’t forget to snap a photo at the entrance that proudly states it’s the oldest licensed pub in York. Steve, the manager, is an absolute asset and looked after us so well. Thank you for a fantastic experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“We stopped in at lunchtime, there was a lovely courtyard, which was full on the day of our visit so we sat inside in a quaint little room. We ordered food and one beer at the counter, had time to chat and relax before the food arrived. Good pub fare. (Forgot to picture the fish and chips, delicious!) We enjoyed our visit.”

“Historic pub that can be easy to miss as the entrance is only small from the Main Street. It’s a Greene King pub so the line up behind the bar could be better but they did have a couple of decent ciders on. Lovely pub despite the breweries best efforts. Would do much better as a free house in my opinion but at least it’s open. 🍻”
