About House Of The Trembling Madness // Stonegate (The Original)
House Of The Trembling Madness on Stonegate in York is a walk-in bar set above a ground floor off licence and ale shop, reached by a staircase. The small room arranges a cooking setup behind the bar that reads more like a camp kitchen than a commercial line, serving dishes such as pie, mash and peas. A selection of craft beers runs alongside the food, drawing on the stock traded through the shop below. The footprint is tight, with seating arranged on the upper floor of the building, and service runs on a walk-in basis throughout opening hours. Shoppers visiting the off licence can also pick up bottles and cans to take away, blurring the line between bar and bottle shop within the same address.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers single out the craft beer selection, though one found it tough to pick something not super strong and another called the coffee stout a bold choice. Close behind are the pie, mash and peas, cooked by one overworked cook on a camping-style setup, and the well stocked off licence downstairs. One group left without dinner after the pies ran out.

“Awesome place . Friendly, helpful staff, good food ..fantastic selection of drinks, then one can lose themselves in the well stocked off licence on the ground floor ...looooossse oneself... Go there”

“The selection of craft beers was excellent, even if it was a bit tough to find one that wasn’t super strong. I was a bit dubious about the food given that it was being prepared by one overworked lad on little more than a camping set up in the bar up top. But, fair play, the pie, mash and peas was excellent. Would recommend this place to anyone. 5 stars.”

“quirky little hideaway above an ale shop. Coffee Stout was a bold decision”
- MghM
“Found this place on google maps, place was an experience as it looked amazing but after getting some drinks and a bread spread we didn't stay for dinner. Pretty sure they cook from behind the bar and it's a tiny space and they had run out of pies. Great place to visit though, highly recommend even for the experience. Only walk ins though so try your luck or expect to wait.”
- Tammy King
“Quirky and fun, lots of history, stairs though so need to be mobile to access the upstairs pub.”
