Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the camembert sharer, ordered as a starter and described as really tasty, with steak close behind: a ribeye with peppercorn sauce and a steak and mustard flatbread that was more filling than expected. Also named are the nachos, big enough to be a sharing plate, plus the chicken burger, trout, pie of the day, fish and chips, and a hot, tasty Sunday roast. Staff are mostly called friendly and welcoming, and the gardens at the front and rear draw praise on sunny days. Service is the recurring complaint. One reviewer, after four visits, describes long waits for food, walking to the bar to ask for the bill, no offer of a second round of drinks and cutlery not replaced after starters. Another found staff disinterested bordering on rude at first, though the same staff were helpful over lunch. Others mention a quiet evening and a pot of curry sauce too small for the chips. One reviewer's dog was spoilt with treats.

“Very mixed experience. Arrived early as we wanted to walk then have lunch. Went in to book a table. Was told there was no need but until we had lunch we couldn’t register our cars in their massive empty car park. We had to pay, set up a new app etc. The staff we met were disinterested bordering on rude. When we got back and had lunch the same staff were very helpful and delivered great service and great food. I last went several years ago and the place was busy. This time it was very empty.”

“We have now visited the Durham Ox around four times, and unfortunately, each visit has been consistently disappointing. The service has been poor on every occasion, with excessively long waits for food and a general lack of attention from staff. We have often ended up getting up from our table and going to the bar to request and pay for the bill rather than waiting any longer. We have also experienced basic service oversights, such as not being offered a second round of drinks and not having our cutlery replaced after our starters. While the food itself is reasonably decent, it is fairly basic, and some of the smaller details really let the experience down. For example, the cheap-tasting ketchup served with a burger meal and lemonade that tastes unpleasantly like soap are disappointing, particularly when dining out. Overall, after four visits, the experience has been consistently underwhelming. Unfortunately, the poor service and lack of attention to detail make it difficult to justify returning.”

“It was a bit quiet inside,as i left it late in the day. Gardens were busy. Great Sunday roast. It was HOT 🔥 and tasty. 😋 Good banter with the staff Especially Tara. Nice to see a smile and manners for a change. Gardens front and rear. I will be back 👍 👌”

“A very nice and cosy dog-friendly pub in a quiet village by the train tracks. There's a large TV with sky sports in a lounge area and there is plenty on the menu. The camembert sharer and chicken burger are particularly nice. The only possible downside would be that if you go to one of the stalls in the toilets for too long, and no one else comes in, the lights will turn out on you. Don't ask me how I know.”

“Great pub, I really recommend coming here, the place is very clean and the staff are friendly. Food is lovely too, I had the pie of the day and shared a camembert as a starter. Really tasty food, will definitely come back when I'm in the area”
