Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the log burner and roaring fire, set among old beams and farm-inspired decor, with the canal-side garden close behind. Diners praise pies with crisp pastry, a steak sandwich, sausage and mash, steak with side salad and a bar snacks menu, and several call the staff friendly. One singles out an alcohol free craft lager, another a delicious Sunday lunch, and dogs are welcome. Complaints centre on food and service. One cheddar, gruyère and onion pie arrived chilled in the middle with a large chunk of potato, and the hot replacement came after the companion had finished eating. Another diner with a booking was told there was no table service, then offered only burgers or pizza as the kitchen closed, with no starters. A third found the lamb rump small, the steak sandwich not tender, and no coffee available. Loud open-mic music with harmonica feedback drowned out conversation on one Wednesday evening, and the free dessert offered for the cold pie was taken home uneaten.

“Found this place while on a random drive on a day off. We ordered 6 plates for 2 people from their brilliant bar snacks menu, plus 2 medium wines and 2 pints of alcohol free lager. A little over £60! The food was delicious, the surroundings were gorgeous and service was great. The non alcoholic craft beer was also the nicest I've tasted. Will come again”

“On first appearance, this is a beautiful canal-side local pub packed with character and charm. It is easy to see how lovely it would be to sit outside by the water in the summer, or snuggle up inside by the large stove in the winter. The bar and waiting staff were friendly, and the menu looked very appealing with all the classics you would expect. I happily chose the mouth-watering cheddar, gruyère, and onion pie. When our food arrived, it looked very good. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill from the first bite. My pie was not just cold, but completely chilled in the middle, and it strangely included a large chunk of potato. I had to send it back to the kitchen. By the time I received a hot replacement, my dinner companion had already finished eating their meal. The staff did nicely offer a free dessert as compensation, but I was already full but after some persuasion brought it home for another family member. To make matters worse, we didn't realise it was open-mic night. At 5:30 pm, two male singers with electric-acoustic guitars and a man playing a harmonica started performing. The harmonica microphone kept buzzing with feedback. The music was so loud we could not hear each other speak. Sadly, this was not the nice, quiet Wednesday night catch-up with a friend that I had hoped for.”

“Visited Friday and had to wait 40 mins for food. The Lamb rump was lovely but portion size not the best. My wife and daughter ordered steak sandwich and would have expected some salad to garnish and steak on them not as tender as one would expect. Also asked for coffee which they said could not be provided as machine not commissioned?? First time here and would give it another go as the outside seating looks nice, hopefully the service and food will be an improvement next time”

“Delicious Sunday lunch, nice atmosphere. We had a pre drink in the garden before lunch inside. Lovely exposed beams and just great interior. Coffee outside in the sun after, overall fantastic . We will be back.”

“Am really sorry to do this as have always had a great time here in the past. I booked a table for last night with the normal great expectation. When we arrived was told there was no table service and we had to order at the bar. No menus at the table so had to ask. Then we went to a really busy bar to try and order and the staff were telling each other the kitchen is shutting in 10 minutes. We eventually got served with 5 minutes to spare to be told it’s burgers or pizza only! Then we were asked had we booked and we said yes so then we were told ok you can order from the main menu but could not order any starters. I was flabbergasted. The staff were not attentive and made us feel that we were an inconvenience. We did make our dissatisfaction known to the person who served our food at the time. We ate our food and left as soon as we could. What a disappointing experience.”
