About Overstone Manor

Overstone Manor is a pub in Northampton at 180 Ecton Lane, with a fresh daily carvery as its main meal. The carvery runs from a self-service counter where diners help themselves to vegetables and sauces, and the menu adds classic pub dishes alongside the roast meats. Food is ordered at the bar, and the pub and restaurant sit within large grounds. On days when the pub serves carvery only, bookings are required and walk-ins are not seated. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

The main complaint is Sunday handling. Two reviewers were seated by staff, then told at the bar that only bookings were being taken, and describe an eye roll when they pointed this out. Another was turned away as a walk-in despite empty tables. Others describe running out of items, including Coca-Cola, pigs in blankets and desserts, and a carvery with one person serving and restocking while vegetables ran out. One group felt rushed, with plates and glasses cleared and the lights switched off while they sat. Some mention messy floors and a power cut.

“Went for dinner on a Sunday, signs out for carvery only, which was fine with us. Taking my dad out after his knee operation. Was taken to a table and seated. Went to the bar and asked if I had a booking, told the lady that we hadn’t and she said ‘we were only doing bookings’. I stated that we had been seated at a table which was then followed by an eye roll. Not professional at all. I’ve never written a bad review but this behaviour was uncalled for. I understand hospitality is struggling but it doesn’t cost anything to have manners. At this point we left”

“Absolutely shocking service — avoid this pub! Honestly, one of the worst experiences we’ve had at a pub. We walked in and were seated by a member of staff at the door, only to be told at the till that they weren’t accepting walk-ins. So why on earth were we seated in the first place? How is a customer supposed to know they aren’t accepting walk-ins when your own staff are seating people? When we explained that we had already been seated by their staff, the woman serving us rolled her eyes and huffed and puffed, as though we were being unreasonable for questioning a completely ridiculous situation. The attitude was disgusting and completely unprofessional. We weren’t asking for special treatment; we were simply pointing out the fact that we had been invited to sit down in the first place. To make matters even worse, they seemed to have run out of practically everything. No Coca-Cola and apparently no suitable alternatives either. Absolutely ridiculous that a pub can have so little available for its customers. What makes the whole experience even more disappointing is that one of our party had recently undergone knee surgery and was visibly wearing a knee brace and using crutches, yet we were still put through this unnecessary hassle. You would expect a bit of basic courtesy and understanding, but clearly that was too much to ask. Between the lack of drinks, the complete lack of communication between staff and the appalling attitude we received, this place was an absolute joke. There was no apology, no attempt to resolve the situation and certainly no sign of decent customer service. We certainly won’t be returning, and based on this experience, I wouldn’t recommend this pub to anyone. A complete waste of time and a thoroughly unpleasant experience.”

“I booked a table of 6 (2 days in advance) for 7pm last night. 4 of us arrived on time but a couple were delayed slightly. We were informed that the only food available was the buffet, but they only had two meats left and had run out of pigs in blankets. There were no desserts available other than the children’s menu. At 7.10pm we were asked if the other two were going to be long as they were waiting to close the buffet (which is advertised as being available until 8pm). Our friends arrived at 7.15pm we went straight to the carvery. The chefs were extremely generous with the meat portions and we all enjoyed our meals. The staff were hovering waiting to clear our plates. They then cleared our glasses without offering another drink or a dessert. We felt very rushed. And then, to our horror, at 8.30pm they actually switched off all the lights in the restaurant whilst we were still sitting at our table! I have never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant in all my life!”

“Stayed nearby and used Overstone Manor for 2 evenings, food was a good sized portions, with plenty of choice. Plenty of free parking, and quick service. Unfortunately the Sunday wasn't as favourable, being turned away as walk in customers weren't being seated. Even though lot of vacant tables that were still waiting to be cleared. I would recommend just avoid Sunday carvery day as they are obviously overwhelmed.”

“Really impressive grounds, the venue is great. First time visitor and attended with high expectations. Bar staff were really ill equipped to take an order. One struggled with an order and took an age to tend to the family ordering food. His colleague arrived after some time, enquired if I were waiting to order! Before taking the order needed to help herself to a few Maltesers…. Then at 20:02 says no more food orders! Can’t help but think if staff were attentive to customers an order would have been in time to eat? Left without sampling the food, I didn’t order any drinks and promptly left. Good luck if you do try this establishment.”
