About Layla's Kitchen Cafe

Layla's Kitchen Cafe operates inside Jesmond United Reformed Church on Burdon Terrace in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and the whole menu is plant-based. No cow's milk is used, so drinks are built on non-dairy options such as oat milk, and the team accommodates gluten-free and nut-allergy requests. An Egyptian lentil stew arrives with a herb and seed sprinkle, while speciality lattes including a beetroot one run alongside coffee, tea and baking that stretches to a gluten-free brownie. Seating inside spreads across several areas, including tables beside a glass wall that looks onto the garden flowers. More tables and chairs sit outside for anyone who prefers to eat outdoors, and dogs are welcome to come along. A step-free entrance lets visitors with mobility needs get in without steps. No booking system runs here, so orders go in at the counter. The cafe opens Wednesday to Saturday during the day, closing Sunday through Tuesday.

Customer Review Summary

Lentils anchor much of the praise here, from a soup one visitor describes as perfectly seasoned under a herb and seed sprinkle to the Egyptian lentil stew taught at a hands on cooking demonstration, where the cook shared the stories behind the dishes alongside crispy cauliflower fritters, soft baladi bread and a hibiscus and rose water drink. Close behind come the drinks, with beetroot, turmeric and oat milk lattes singled out by those who struggle to find non dairy options done well. Also named repeatedly: a light, flaky samosa, hummus and fresh salads, a gluten free brownie, croissants and a blueberry and almond cake. Several mention being surprised to find a clean, modern room tucked inside a church in a quiet part of Jesmond, with seating outside and dogs welcome. Caveats are few: one notes it is not the cheapest, another suggests staff ask before warming scones and pastries, having preferred a cold scone.

“Delicious salads all GF, lovely GF Brownie, good drinks selection. Just remember this is a plant based cafe so no Cow's milk. Really calm atmosphere so lovely for a quieter lunch and top quality food and drinks. Not the cheapest but well worth it. Putting it.on our regular list.”
  • Alisha
“Lovely little cafe, staff are friendly & welcoming. Food is lovely, hearty & healthy. The croissant was really delicious! Only thing I’d suggest is asking before warming scones or pastries up, as I would have preferred my scone cold. Will be back ☺️”
  • Audrey Gill
“Bonus of arriving early for the '8 Hands Extravaganza' piano concert at Jesmond United Reformed Church was to find Layla's Cafe open. Fabulous menu choice - decided on oat milk latte & blueberry & almond cake - delicious. Well worth a visit - a little hidden treasure, 5 stars!”
