About Caffe 1901 Bistro, Jesmond

Caffe 1901 Bistro is a cafe and breakfast restaurant on St George's Terrace in Jesmond, set inside a former church building with high ceilings. Orders are placed at the counter after staff hand out menus, and breakfast and brunch run all day until closing rather than switching to a separate lunch menu. The Full English Breakfast and Vegan Breakfast anchor a 12-dish menu, alongside cakes and sweets displayed for eating in or taking away. No bookings are taken, so a queue is common at busy times, particularly weekends. A step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs make the room workable for families with young children. Dogs are welcome inside, with water bowls put out for them. Outdoor seating gives an option for eating outside, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Alternative milks, including oat and almond, can be added to hot drinks for an extra charge.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the full English and the breakfast brunch menu, with the 1901 breakfast brioche, eggs Benedict and a halloumi add-on singled out as tasty. Close behind is the converted church itself, described as spacious with high ceilings, and the flat white and speciality-bean coffee get repeated praise. Others mention the vegan breakfast with avocado on toast, the 1901 salad with warmed goats cheese, the fruit scone and a cake display that impressed several diners. Dogs are welcomed with water bowls and treats. The main complaints are queues, since bookings aren't taken, with waits reported at 15 to 30 minutes at weekends. A few call the food average, citing a dry salted caramel banoffee french toast, a bland slow-cooked beef Benedict and an unremarkable full English. One reviewer was unhappy with a scorching latte and a long wait for two breakfasts, and others found prices high, including a surcharge on alternative milk. One reviewer was told they could get a refund if they didn't like the orange and poppy seed loaf, and then found it really good.

“What a gem of a place!! We were a party of 3 as soon as we arrived we were given menus and showed to our table. The menu has a selection of food we all choose something different , baked potato with beans and cheese , chicken club sandwich and a full English breakfast. The food arrived quickly and was absolutely delicious!! We could not manage to desert but we did buy some cakes from the mouth watering display to take home . Highly recommend this place has a great vibe, fantastic food selection and to die for cake selection. We will definitely be back.”

“Lovely interior, really nice drinks (we got the brown sugar iced matcha and white chocolate and pistachio iced latte). Food was ok! Not wowed ! We got the full English (unremarkable) and veggie hash bowl (super nice just salty!). Would go again for the vibes and a coffee and pastry or scone but maybe not for a big meal! 2 drinks, 2 meals, 2 pastry’s was £50 :)”

“We visited for breakfast. When we arrived the cafe was full with people waiting. A member of staff greeted us with a smile and gave us menus for us to look at whilst we waited for a table. I would say we were seated within five minutes. My …”
