About Burds

Burds is a cafe and brunch spot in The Gatehouse in Newcastle Upon Tyne, on the premises of The Fleming. The 76-dish menu centres on the "Muff" breakfast muffin, with veggie muffins as an alternative, and Truffle Parmesan Hash Browns. Eggs come poached or fried, and eggs Benedict and eggs royale sit alongside avocado toast. Espresso covers the coffee side, and the counter holds banana bread, brownies and cookies. The cafe is open Wednesday to Sunday, daytime only, and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Service is walk-in, with reservations taken only for big parties, and the small space inside fills up quickly. Dogs are welcome, and the team keeps treats and water on hand for them. The cafe sits next to the parking spaces by the main gate.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the breakfast muffin, with the veggie muffins and a toasted muffin with crispy bacon praised, and the avocado toast with a perfectly cooked side poached egg called the best one reviewed has had in Newcastle. Close behind are the hashbrowns, eggs Benedict, and a salmon, eggs and avocado sourdough, while coffee, a matcha latte on oat milk, and the granolas also draw praise. Several mention the baked goods at the counter, including banana bread and brownies, along with friendly staff and a dog-friendly welcome. The recurring caveat is space. The inside is described as very small and often full, with outdoor seating and blankets in the cold, and one wheelchair user's party found only a tiny spot by the door beyond a large step and could not book the one usable table. One reviewer waited a long time for food after being seated first, and found the staff dismissive. Another reports biting into hard grit in a mushroom dish twice, though the chef explained and the team handled it well.

“One of my favourite brunch places in Newcastle, been many times. The Muff and the various granolas have been excellent. Great selection of baked goods. Staff very friendly and wonderful taste in music.”

“Lovely building and setting. Dog friendly with some dog treats and water available which is nice. Food and coffee both average, not bad but nothing special, ok for the price. Very disappointing service. Despite arriving 20 minutes before the opening time, being first in the queue and being seated first. We waited 1hr 10mins for our food to arrive. Staff were dismissive and blamed them business of the restaurant. Would not recommend if you are with children or are hungry.”

“The avocado toast is genuinely the best I have had in Newcastle, so green, so fresh, and packed with unique flavors that all worked perfectly together. The side poached egg was also cooked perfectly. The whole atmosphere felt cozy and relaxed. The staff are really friendly and welcoming.”

“The best breakfast around, fresh produce, fresh bread. Not just your standard eggs royale but also crispy capers, micro coriander, really cool!”

“Pre-warning for anyone attending as or with a wheelchair user. Listed as accessible online (which it technically is) but very limited space. Option of sitting outside or a very small space by the door before a large step to access the main seating area. We thought it was a strange setup that there has been a long ramp made to get to the door for the space inside to be very minimal for wheelchair users. Maybe made with the idea of sitting outside but unfortunately too cold today. We wanted to book the one inside table we could have used but it is walk in only which we were aware of before attending. Unfortunate as we were looking forward to tasting what looks like great food. Hopefully more can be done to improve their accessibility. Don’t want to rate too harshly as we didn’t get to experience the service or food but definitely something to consider for those attending with accessibility to consider.”
