About Meli cafe

Meli cafe sits up several flights from an entrance tucked off Northumberland Street, a cafe in Newcastle city centre opposite Haymarket and beside the Haymarket metro station. The climb is easy to miss from the street, and a lift plus step-free access means visitors with mobility needs can still reach the upper floor, where the seating looks out over Northumberland Street and Haymarket below. Traditional Greek coffee anchors the drinks list, served alongside iced espresso. Homemade cakes and baked goods come out of the kitchen, including clementine and almond cake and scones, while the hot food side stays short with paninis and frittata. The owners talk customers through what is on offer. Dogs are welcome, and the room suits people settling in with a book or laptop. No booking is taken, so you arrive and order at the counter. It runs daytime hours Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays, and a loyalty stamp card earns a free drink.

Customer Review Summary

The homemade cakes draw the most attention: one reviewer singles out the cheddar and apple scone and the orange and semolina cake, another the clementine and almond cake that recalled portokalopita without the heavy syrup, and another the pear and almond. Close behind is the coffee, with the traditional Greek coffee and an organic iced espresso both praised, alongside a frittata and vegetarian paninis reviewers describe as fresh and homemade. Several call the owners and staff friendly and happy to talk through the menu, and the quiet, bright upstairs room with views over Haymarket and Northumberland Street comes up repeatedly as a place to read or work, though one notes the street noise carries when the windows are open. Complaints are mild and scattered: one finds the hot food menu limited with a side salad charged extra, one calls the rosemary cake average, one a cappuccino thin on foam, and opinions on value split between reasonable and slightly expensive. More than one mentions the entrance is easy to miss, up several flights of stairs.

“I would give Meli Cafe 7 stars if I could - this is place is a hidden gem. The coffee 10/10, the frittata 10/10, the pear and almond cake 10/10. Cannot recommend this place enough - everything is homemade and delicious!”

“This amazing café is located in the heart of Newcastle city centre. It's a bit difficult to see the entrance, but once you know where it is, you definitely won't forget it! The food was amazing and the Greek sauce was incredible. The only thing I would say is that the cappuccino didn't have much foam, but that's just a matter of personal taste.”

“Wow. This cafe is an absolute hidden gem, the owners are superb and have amazing customer service. Not to mention it’s all pesticide free (Organic) 🥳 Would highly recommend It is slightly spenny however you pay for quality not quantity. Overall the service was great, really enjoyed my organic iced espresso, would most definitely be returning.”
