About Higher Ground

Higher Ground is a British restaurant and bar on Faulkner House in Manchester, built around an open kitchen with seats at the kitchen counter where diners watch the chefs work. The menu is written as small plates, so guests order several dishes to fill up, and a tasting menu and a seasonal sharing menu are offered as well. The kitchen changes the menu daily or seasonally, using seasonal ingredients from small local producers. Starters include Yellow Pea Fritters, Berwick Edge and Padron Peppers, and the pasta dishes include egg pasta filled with caramelized onions and ricotta. The wine list includes natural wines and wine pairings. The team explains the dishes and menu to guests, including allergen questions.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the yellow pea fritters, one reviewer calling them a dish that stayed with them, and the daily changing seasonal menu built on local ingredients. Close behind are the pasta, with pork and egg versions both mentioned, the custard tart, the rhubarb dessert, and the green tomato gazpacho. Many sit at the open kitchen counter and enjoy watching the chefs work, and several praise the wine pairings and the staff explaining each dish and handling allergies. The recurring caveats are about the cooking and portions. A few dishes were slightly salty, one reviewer wanted more uniqueness from some plates, and another found the small plates meant ordering quite a bit to get full. One found the egg pasta good but not worth ordering again, and another preferred the look of the cane sugar ice cream to its taste, since the apple caramel overshadowed it. Several visits were anniversary dinners, and one reviewer planned to return for theirs.

“Overall, we has an enjoyable dining experience. Nice interior with an open kitchen, and we went for the lunch seasonal menu. The standout for me was the green tomato gazpacho. It was incredibly refreshing, and the combination of tuna and salmon roe worked beautifully. The yellow pea fritter and baby courgette with goat’s curd were also very enjoyable. I really liked the starters overall, although I wish there had been just a slight hint of sweetness to balance the flavours. For the main, the beef was excellent. It was cooked perfectly, tender, and paired wonderfully with the scallion. The dessert was a lovely way to finish the meal. I also appreciated their commitment to sourcing quality ingredients from small local producers, which made the experience feel even more thoughtful. My only minor criticism is that a few dishes were slightly on the salty side. Overall, it was a creative and well executed meal, and I’d happily recommend it.”

“My favourite restaurant in Manchester. The food is incredible! creative without feeling forced, with the kind of flavours that genuinely surprise you in the best way. Everything we had was excellent, my favourite was the pasta, but also everything else! the place has such a relaxed, chilled-out atmosphere that makes it very easy to settle in and enjoy the evening. One of those rare restaurants that feels exciting and comforting at the same time. Always worth coming back to.”

“Really amazing service some of the best we’ve had in a long time. some of the dishes were excellent especially the trout, some didn’t work quite as well as I would’ve liked obviously it’s small plates and you have to order quite a bit to get full. spent about £90 per person for two for the food that you can see in the pictures as well as a bottle one. for an innovative Michelin quality food This is decent. also have a tasting menu for £65 per person. would recommend wanted a bit more from some of the dishes in terms of uniqueness and innovation. Would still highly recommend.”
