About Habesha Restaurant

Habesha Restaurant is an Ethiopian restaurant in Manchester, found on the top floor of a kebab shop at 29-31 Sackville St. The kitchen serves East African stews, with dishes such as doro wot, made with chicken, and beef kitfo. Meals come with injera, a sour flatbread that diners use to scoop up the food, and the team explains how to eat with it. Portions are made for sharing, and two people often split one meal. Vegetarians can order the Yetsom Beyaynetu platter, and a lentil dish is on the menu too. Coffee is served, and artefacts decorate the room.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the vegetarian dishes, including the Yetsom Beyaynetu platter and a lentil option, served with injera that reviewers use to scoop up everything. Close behind are the doro wot, which some find on the spicier side, and the lega tibs, described as a good choice for those who avoid spice. Reviewers call the food authentic, rich and filling, with generous portions and prices they find reasonable and honest. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and warm, and one server showed a table how to eat with the bread. The caveats are about pace and setting. One reviewer waited half an hour for food in a half empty room, another found service slow on a busy Saturday afternoon, and one found the beef poorer in quality and oddly seasoned. A few mention the interior, with visible food storage near the bar and a room above a kebab shop. One reviewer who asked for medium spice still found it too hot, and a regular also recommends the coffee.

“Do NOT sleep on this place !! Really beautiful Ethiopian food, personally I had the Lega Tibs which is perfect if you aren’t a spice fan but still want something warm. My two associates had the Doro Wot which is a bit more on the spicier side but still comfortable and both dishes were delicious. What we did not know is that all dishes are served with Injera bread, which is perfect to dip with any dish, and very delicious. Food was so filling I could barely finish my plate. Absolutely beautiful, would recommend to anyone looking for real Ethiopian food.”

“This restaurant was a real culinary discovery for us - it was our first time trying African food, and the experience was both interesting and memorable. We ordered chicken doro wot, beef kitfo, and a vegetarian platter, all served with sour flatbread. The flavors were rich and original, and everything tasted very good. However, even though I asked for medium spice, the dishes were still a bit too spicy for my taste. The service was excellent - the lady who served us was very friendly and took the time to explain how the dishes should be eaten, which we really appreciated. The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the central location in Manchester. The only downside for me was the interior of the restaurant. Part of the space near the bar was used as visible food storage, which did not create the best impression and slightly affected the overall atmosphere.”
