About The Wharf

The Wharf is a pub in Castlefield, Manchester, on Slate Wharf beside the canal basin, set in a warehouse-style building with two distinct halves. Downstairs follows the pub format, while upstairs works as a restaurant with full table service. That split lets a visit be a quick drink at ground level or a sit-down meal on the upper floor. The menu includes a Sunday roast with a choice of lamb or beef, with cauliflower cheese among the sides. Sea bass sits alongside the roasts for those who want fish. The kitchen also caters to vegan and gluten free diners.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is what reviewers return to most, with the lamb and beef singled out as well cooked, alongside huge Yorkshire puddings, crisp roast potatoes and sides of cauliflower cheese and buttered mash. Close behind is the sea bass, called delicious and perfectly cooked, and one reviewer praised the cheese pie. Many mention the canal-side beer garden and plenty of seating inside and out, and a few say the staff were friendly. Reviewers also note a wide range of gluten free options and vegan roasts. The complaints are small but specific. One diner's steak came cooked more than medium, another's rump steak chips arrived lukewarm, and a third found the roast chicken sold out on a busy match day. One reviewer was not told that samphire was swapped for buttered greens, and another found gravy poured over a cheese and onion pie. Some suggest booking ahead for busy times. One reviewer's lukewarm chips were replaced swiftly and without fuss.

“Great pub on the canal with loads of seating both inside and outside. Good selection of beers with a few real ales though I wouldn't mind a couple more! Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is fantastic, roast dinners are excellent. Lots of options and brilliantly cooked with huge Yorkshire puddings. Deserts are excellent too. There are a huge amount of gluten free options and staff are helpful in ensuring no allergens are present.”

“Fabulous The food was awesome, best sea bass I've had. The staff were all lovely, polite and attentive. Slight niggles were I didn't get the samphire with my dish as described in the menu but it wasn't a problem as the replacement buttered greens were lovely, it just would have been nice to have been informed of the replacement when I ordered. A fellow guests' meal had gravy poured over her cheese and onion pie which she would have preferred to have poured herself (on the rest of the meal but not on the pie, beef/meat yes but cheese no! ) and the ladies toilet felt a bit overlooked as there was a lot of toilet paper all over the floor of one of the cubicles. These are very minor nit-picks, the place deserves a 5 star review just constructive gripes hopefully. The experience was still beyond expectation. The two fussy eaters had nothing bad to say at all which is a compliment in itself! Well worth a visit when you're next in Castlefield Side note - it was recommended we booked as we preferred to dine inside”

“Food was great, if you are two no need for the side dishes sharing just get 1-2 sides, I personally am not a big fan of ordering in the Bar but it seems to be the thing so it’s fine Ask for the mint sauce it’s very good with the Sunday roast”

“Possibly the best sunny Sunday roast spot in Manchester. There’s something very satisfying about sitting by the canal, surrounded by Manchester’s ever-growing skyscrapers, pretending you’re just out for a peaceful Sunday while mentally planning dessert. I went for the lamb roast and it was rich, tender and packed with flavour. Accompanied by great roast veg and some very well cooked roast potatoes, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find these days. Crispy roasties seem to have become a lost art. The half roast chicken (£23.95) isn’t exactly cheap, but the satisfaction levels are very high, and the quality absolutely backs it up. Tom went for the cheese pie and, as a self-appointed pie connoisseur, rated it as one of the best he’s had, which is not praise handed out lightly. Excellent food, great setting and one of those places where you suddenly realise you’ve been sat there for far longer than planned. Verdict: Top quality food in one of Manchester’s best Sunday settings. 🍽️ Paying customer | Honest review”

“The Wharf was one of the highlights of our trip to Manchester. The atmosphere was fantastic. Sitting outside by the water with a gentle breeze was incredibly relaxing, and it was the perfect place to unwind. By around 4 or 5 pm, all the outdoor tables were already full, which says a lot about how popular this place is. The food was excellent. The sea bass was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. Even after we returned to London, my wife was still talking about how much she loved it. I also ordered the steak medium. It was cooked slightly more than I expected, but it was still enjoyable and certainly didn't affect our overall dining experience. One of the most memorable moments was that the couple sitting next to us ordered exactly the same dishes as we did. We all laughed about the coincidence, and it made us think that these must be some of the restaurant's best and most popular dishes! Overall, The Wharf offers a wonderful atmosphere, high-quality food, and a truly enjoyable dining experience. If we ever return to Manchester, this will definitely be our first choice, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting the city.”

Good to know

“The Wharf, in the heart of canal basin in Castlefield, Manchester, is a large warehouse-style building, but there are innumerable nooks and crannies so you can find cosy, intimate rooms and alcoves, or more buzzy, dynamic areas if you prefer. Downstairs is more pub service in style, whereas upstairs is more restauranty with full table service.”
