Quick info
About Britons Protection
Britons Protection is a pub on Great Bridgewater St in Manchester, with a Victorian-era interior of tile work and paintings. The building is divided into several small rooms, and the front bar is separate from the rest of the pub. Cask ale runs on multiple hand pumps alongside other draught options, and Murphy's and Guinness are both poured on draught. The whisky selection includes independent bottlings and tasting flights. Beyond beer and spirits, the drinks list covers wine, fizz, seasonal cocktails and low or no alcohol choices. The pub says it has occupied the same building since 1806.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the building itself: Victorian tile work and paintings, many separate small rooms with comfortable chairs, and a beer garden at the back. One likens it to a museum and a pub in one. Close behind is the drink, with cask ale from a good run of hand pumps and a brilliant Guinness earning praise. One whisky fan describes rare independent bottlings and tasting flights. The recurring caveat is range. One reviewer says the whisky selection has been dramatically reduced since 2024. Another, a cask drinker, finds the beer choice dull and names Bass, Tim Taylor and Plum Porter, and a third says the selection is weak for a beer nerd. Service is split. Several praise friendly, knowledgeable bar staff, while one describes being ignored at the bar and handed a card reader without being told the price of a pint. One visitor found it quiet on a Thursday evening in January, then watched it fill up for the last hour before closing.

“Sad to say, 1st time in. Nice pint of Murphy's and a great chat with the two staff.”

“Definitely slipped down from it's past glory. The bar staff were very poor. Either ignoring who was at the bar or not knowing who was next. When I got served the Irish fella couldn't be bothered to talk, look up or even tell me how much the pint of Murphys was. He just held the card reader out in my direction whilst talking to his mate. I'll have to check my app to see how much they charge. Very poor. Then there's the beer choice. Normally drink cask but this was Green King levels of excitement - Bass, Tim Taylor, Plum Porter.... Jesus give me something that at least has seen a hop. Sadly a pub that has clearly survived on its past reputation and now employs a bunch of rude kids or can't actually be arsed.”

“This is a solid venue for a pint or two. It is sort of broken up into small rooms. Lots of comfortable chairs. The patrons are engaged in conversation. They're not scrolling through their phones. It is a good looking place, The folks behind the bar know their craft. Nothing fancy. It's just exactly what a true Manchester pub should be.”

“This pub is a must check out. Good beer selection. Large outside searing area. And amazong tile work and paintings inside. Like a museum and a pub in one basically. Says its been there since 1806 in the same building.”
