Quick info
About Stables Tavern
Stables Tavern is an independent pub on St Johns House in Manchester, with live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The kitchen makes its pies in house, including a beef and barley pie, and gravy is poured over them. Sausage rolls are also on the food list, and a selection of crisps is there to go with a pint. Draught beers and real ales lead the bar, with a relaunched Boddington's bitter among them, and cocktails and a small wine list sit alongside. The building is barn-like, with a front room and a rear room. The rear room holds a fire and a sofa, and it can be closed off for private hire by groups. The pub takes walk-ins, and dogs are welcome. Payment is by card only.

Customer Review Summary
Pies lead the praise, with reviewers singling out the beef and barley pie as really tasty and the homemade beef and root vegetable pie with mash and greens as delicious and flawless. One group shared three pies alongside sausage rolls. Beer comes close behind, with diners describing a great selection of draft beers, Asahi in particular, and well conditioned ales. A rosé and a few cocktails also get a mention. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and chatty, and some helped customers choose a beer or pick crisps to go with a pint. Daytime visits are described as quiet and spacious, with outdoor seating at the front and a cosy fire in the back room, though one reviewer found that room closed for a private hire. The main complaint concerns the unisex toilets, where one reviewer reports a strong smell of urine and believes there was urine on the floor. One regular says the pie server has taken to pouring their gravy in the shape of a heart.

“Visited The Stables Tavern and had an unforgettable experience\! The bar lady’s attitude really added to the flavour of the night, especially when she launched five different flavours of crisps directly at me\. Never expected to get a complimentary crisp tasting in such dramatic fashion\. Definitely one of the more memorable pub visits I’ve had”

“Just discovered this pub having a stroll around castlefield. Staff were very friendly, Ellis helped us to choose from a lovely ale selection. Recommend the beef and barley pie experience, really tasty - myself and my wife will be returning soon. If anyone fancies watching the kids send me an email.”

“Went to The Stables a few nights ago with some friends and had a great welcome from the team. The draft beers were great, we had a very pleasant rosé and a couple of cocktails alongside the sausage rolls and three pies that we shared. Highly recommended!”
