About The Old Wellington
The Old Wellington is a pub in Manchester on Cathedral Gates, housed in a Tudor-style building dating to 1552 that was moved to Shambles Square. Inside, the rooms have low ceilings, dark wood beams and uneven floorboards. Seating continues on the first floor and the top floor, where the ceiling is vaulted. The menu includes pies, with a steak pie among them, and fish and chips served with thick-cut chips and mushy peas. A cask ale selection is on offer, with pints poured from the cask. Orders are placed through a QR code system.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come mainly for the building itself, a Tudor-style pub with low beams, creaking floors and a vaulted ceiling on the top floor, which several describe as the most atmospheric place to enjoy a pint. Food comes close behind: the fish and chips, with crispy beer batter and flaky cod, and the pies, called tasty, while sticky chicken also gets praise. Cask ales earn credit for being well poured and varied, and staff are called friendly and attentive, with swift ordering through a QR system even at busy times. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the draft beer watery, another disliked the mushy peas and expected better tartar sauce, and one notes there is no bar with stools, so it is not a traditional bar environment. One visitor left with free stickers from the staff.

“A great traditional old pub in the heart of Manchester with tastiest pies and fabulous decor. On a grey and drizzly Manchester evening it was a comforting meal with attentive staff.”

“Tasty fish, and chips are crispy I didn't like the mushy peans as a first time trying it, maybe its just me. Tartar sauce I expected it to be better, but nonetheless good Good and refreshing Iced tea.”

“Stepping into The Old Wellington in Manchester feels like embarking on a beautiful journey back in time. Built in 1552 as a draper shop, this stunning, classic Tudor building stands as a remarkable, resilient survivor in the heart of a modern, bustling city. Walking through the ancient doors, you are instantly wrapped in centuries of rich history, from its low timber ceilings to its wonderfully uneven, creaking floors. Amazingly, this historic gem survived both the Blitz and a massive redevelopment, even being physically raised and moved three hundred meters to its current home at Shambles Square in the late 1990s. Today, it operates as a wonderfully atmospheric pub where history seamlessly meets hearty, modern hospitality. The service is incredibly warm and welcoming, making you feel like a valued guest in an ancient, cozy tavern. We enjoyed a beautifully poured, cold, refreshing pint of local cask ale alongside some classic, comforting pub food, which tasted absolutely delicious in such an iconic setting. The outdoor seating area is particularly fantastic for soaking in the unique, vibrant atmosphere of the square. Whether you are a passionate history enthusiast or simply seeking a great pub experience, this legendary Manchester landmark is a truly magnificent treasure.”

“Draft beer was not good. It had a watery taste. Food was good and the gin and tonic so far. I had a table at first floor. There was a good waiter there. He took all the order but not rushed me. All were in time. There is not a bar with stalls. Dont expect a traditional bar environment.”

“Nice fresh beer collection. Historical architecture. I did not order food but they have a nice menu. Liked the place, vibe, bathroom is clean. Staff is helpful and polite. John Byron was born in this building 😬”
