About Cane & Grain

Cane & Grain is a New York-style bar at 51 Thomas St in Manchester, spread over three themed floors and finished with a sun roof terrace. The kitchen cooks modern Mexican food with some Texan options, and the menu includes tacos and a corn salad. Margaritas come in original, mango and pineapple, alongside a wider cocktail menu. Menus sit on the tables and are also available through a QR code, and orders go in from the table. A lunch deal pairs a burger with chips, a chicken wing and a drink. The APT space is set aside for private bookings and events, which suits groups.

Customer Review Summary

Tacos draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out the pork taco and the corn salad that comes alongside, plus in-house marinades and slow cooks. Close behind are the drinks, from an original margarita and a mango and pineapple one to a cocktail menu described as unusual and fitting to the food. A lunch deal of burger, chips, chicken wing and drink is called incredible value, and a chicken burger with dusted fries also gets credit. Many sit outside in the sun or on the roof terrace and describe friendly, quick service from bar staff and servers. Two reviewers are sharply negative. One long-time birthday regular found the tacos not worth the money, the chips cold and the atmosphere gone. Another met uninterested staff, poorly made fried food and no side plates or cutlery, and a flat beer was replaced only after a large sigh.

“A chilled out bar and restaurant, with a good vibe. We sat outside for a few hours in the sun and were able to order beers and food via the QR code (menus are on the table and also via the QR web page) at our table. Service was friendly and really quick. The beers are well kept are around £6.50 a pint. The food was excellent. I ordered a chicken burger and dusted fries for £17.”

“I've been coming here for my daughter's birthday for 10years as a yearly tradition. Every year we have had such a good time and the food had been amazing. Unfortunately I can't say that with today. The taco's were not worth the money, chips were cold and both didn't look like the picture. No atmosphere, seems to have lost it's vibe & character. Shame as we used to love it & now looking for a new place to go next year.”

“Spontaneously chose here for a quick lunch yesterday and so happy we did. The tacos and corn salad were amazing (pork taco was my fave) and we had an original and a mango and pineapple margarita which were both delicious. Wish we had time to stay for more drinks. Sat outside in the sun vibes were immaculate and the guy on the bar was lovely. Thanks!”

“Gorgeous bar, it was a hot day so we sat on the sun roof terrace. Amazing drink selection and friendly staff 😊”

“I wouldn’t bother… Sadly the staff are very uninterested in your custom, no friendliness or even a smile considering we were eating and drinking, it felt like eating at an overpriced fast food restaurants which is strange since they’d recently launched their new Cantina concept you think they’d put effort into it. Dirty tables, poor fried food slopped together, no side plates or cutlery I’ve genuinely had much better service in a Wetherspoons, the GM should be embarrassed that their staff look really unhappy to be there and deal with the general public. To add insult to injury the beer was super flat and I was met with a large sigh when asked to replace, maybe it was a bad Saturday for them but considering I’m a super polite and empathetic person having worked many years in hospitality I dread to think if they had an awkward customer. Plenty of better options either side of pain and groan sorry Cain and Grain.”
