About The Temple (Temple of Convenience)

The Temple (Temple of Convenience) is a pub at 100 Great Bridgewater St in Manchester, housed in a converted underground Victorian public toilet. The bar sits below street level, and its small size means limited seating and floor space inside. Decor is basic and simple, and the room is low lit. A jukebox and a music playlist supply the sound, and the pub keeps an extensive calendar of live music. The drinks list pairs a limited range of beers with a selection of other drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Music is what reviewers raise most at this bar in a converted Victorian public toilet, praising the jukebox, the playlist and an extensive calendar of live music. One recalls a record release party for a favourite band. Close behind is the setting itself, described as a unique, novel underground pub with a low lit, hidden feel, a chilled atmosphere and a mixed clientele. Several mention friendly bar staff and a good selection of drinks, and one calls it the perfect antidote to wine and cocktail bars. The recurring caveat is space: reviewers say it takes few people to fill it and inside seating is limited, though there is seating outside on the street. One finds the beer range limited and the place basic, and another says anyone who prefers a Carling in a chain pub rather than a dive bar might not take to it. One reviewer who never got a drink inside says they will try again next time in Manchester.

“Good selection of drinks, great jukebox and felt friendly and safe. Limited space inside and if you're not into "dive bars" and prefer a Carling in a chain pub, might not be for you. Also seating outside if the weather's favourable.”
  • Delmantus Raven
“A novel place, good staff and drink selection. Worth a visit but do be aware that due to its size there is limited seating.”
  • Matthew Fleetwood
“Came in sat down then decided to go into the toilet. Staff member followed me into the cubicle and told me to “Behave or (insert bad word here) off!” I might of been a little loud but I wasn’t doing any wrong. He then asked my family “What’s wrong with him?” They told him about my mental health issues and he just said “Oh”. No apology no nothing. Absolutely disgusting. Zero stars avoid this place.”
  • Grumpy Expat
“What a great pub. The perfect Manchester antidote to wine and cocktail bars.”
  • Emma Binning
“I would love to have had a drink in here, it looked like great fun! A converted gentleman’s public convenience, now acting as a bar. There is outside seating on the street but I’d have liked to have had a drink inside for the full experience. Next time I’m in Manchester I’ll try again.”
