About The Muggleton Inn
The Muggleton Inn is a Wetherspoons pub at 8-9 High St in Maidstone, and its name nods to "Muggleton", the name Dickens gave the town in The Pickwick Papers. The pub spreads over two floors, with a bar upstairs and a lower bar downstairs. Customers order and pay at the bar, and the food and drinks are brought to the table. Anyone who prefers to skip the bar can order through the app instead. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Service at the bar is the most common complaint, with reviewers describing long waits upstairs and staff walking past without acknowledging them. One reviewer waited at the upstairs bar with no staff around, then gave up on a coffee a few days later. Another switched to ordering on the app after standing at the bar. Food draws mixed reports. Diners praise the chicken wings as meaty and juicy, along with the fish and chips and a beef curry. Others describe a reheated breakfast with dry bacon and hard hash browns, a barely warm jacket potato that would not melt the cheese, and onion rings swimming in grease, though that diner received a full refund. Some reviewers also mention loud, swearing drinkers. One group says they were refused further service during a 60th birthday celebration and received no apology. Several single out staff kindness, including a manager who brought water, lent his coat and walked a drunk friend safely to the car, and a young server who sat with a visually impaired customer and explained the menu. Reviewers also call it a beautiful old building with plenty of seating.

“The food is nice and reasonably priced. Some staff are nice but others appear to have got out of the wrong side of the bed and have zero customer service skills. Cheap booze so often attracts "drinkers" who can be loud and continuously swearing and bring the place down.”

“A nice venue with great food and service. Wetherspoons do not disappoint here, and strike a good balance of atmosphere and decent food and drinks. There is plenty of seating and somewhere for everyone to sit.”

“I just wanted to share a truly positive experience I had recently. My friend had unfortunately had a bit too much to drink, and what could have been a difficult situation was completely turned around thanks to the kindness of one of the managers, Kieran. He went far beyond what anyone would expect — making sure we had water, giving his own coat to cover my friend, and even taking the time to walk us safely to our car. Throughout it all, he was calm, respectful, and genuinely caring. It’s rare to come across someone who shows that level of compassion and responsibility. Kieran is an absolute credit to the team, and his actions made a lasting impression on us. I can’t thank him enough.”

“Had a lovely experience with my nice and young son. Lovely staff especially Alex W. She was very helpful and kind. Also a young lady named Abbey helped a visually impaired man to his seat, sat with him and helped explain the odds and sods and then gave him a genuine hug. It was so wife to see young people that have such good manners and the actual ability to communicate. If the manager sees this I hope that he passes this on and keeps hold of these pair. They were brilliant. Love a spoons!!”

“Forgot the onion rings then they gave me some swimming in grease. The lettuce and tomato in the bun looked like it was last weeks. They did give a full refund but I was so disappointed as the burns night burger looked so nice…”

Good to know
“Charles Dickens knew the Medway towns well. Maidstone, or ‘Muggleton’, as he called it, featured in The Pickwick Papers. First published in monthly parts (during March 1836–October 1837), it is one of his best-known works.”
