Quick info
About Golden Phoenix
Golden Phoenix is a Chinese restaurant at 37-38 Gerrard St in London's Chinatown, with a dedicated gluten free menu and a kitchen arranged to reduce cross-contamination. The owner adapted the menu after the owner's son was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and the team reminds gluten free diners to use separate chopsticks. Sweet & sour chicken is among the gluten free dishes. The wider Cantonese menu runs from dim sum, including gyoza, to Lobster with Ginger and Spring Onions. Seven party rooms across three floors host weddings, corporate events and birthdays for large groups, and golden dragons decorate the walls. Families are often seated on the top floor, where dishes arrive by dumb waiter.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return for the gluten free menu, and the sweet and sour chicken comes up most, with diners also naming the salt and pepper squid, dim sum, ho fun noodles with beef in black bean sauce, and Cheung Fun. Several describe the dedicated gluten free preparation and kitchen as the reason they can eat Chinese food safely, and one says a non gluten free husband called it the best Chinese food he had tasted. Staff reminding a family to use separate chopsticks is also mentioned. Lunch queues form before opening, and one reviewer suggests booking ahead.

“My wife was excited for a Gluten Free Chinese menu she found in London’s Chinatown. Apparently the owner’s son was diagnosed Coeliac and didn’t want him to miss out on family meals. Contrary to some reviews, we found the staff helpful and polite; but to be fair we’re used to the experience and are happy if anyone even smiles. Reassuringly full of Asians and the kitchen was fast. All our dishes delivered in flavour and the standouts were the Squid and the Cheung Fun. Chicken dish came out like warm but we didn’t fuss as it really didn’t detract. Place had a nice buzz, staff busily transporting plates from the dumb waiters, huge sharing plates and great aromas. I was so happy my partner was able to order Gluten Free without worrying. Was it the best Chinese food I’ve ever had? Who cares, we were happy. Not inexpensive but so worth it to eat safely.”

“What can I say about Golden Phoenix? "A coeliac heaven". After years of missing out on Chinese food and thinking Chinatown was completely off-limits, finding out they have a fully coeliac-safe menu was a dream. Meeting the owner, Marina, made it even better - she adapted the menu after her son was diagnosed with coeliac disease so he wouldn't miss out on family meals. You can genuinely feel that care in the food and safety measures in place. We recently hosted a Gluten Free Dinner Club event here for over 100 people with a curated gluten free menu featuring roast duck, beef noodles, dim sum, gyozas, and pork belly. Absolutely fantastic. Every single plate was practically licked clean, and the team handled a crowd that size effortlessly. Highly recommend visiting whether you’re solo or bringing a big group. It gets busy (for good reason!), so definitely book ahead!”

“A reassuringly busy place - with a queue for lunch even before it opened! Came here for the gluten free food and was not disappointed!! Have not had dim sum in decades and was such a treat to enjoy again! The other dishes I shared with a friend were just as good. Highly recommend, especially for other GF diners - what a treat!! 🌟”

“Backstory is pretty cool and they have dedicated gluten free prep space. Look this one up for full details. I had the gluten free sweet and sour chicken. It was good, but doesn’t make the top of my list for meals during our trip. There was nothing wrong with it, just nothing spectacular either. I was hoping for GF egg rolls or the succulent breading I remember on the sweet & sour chicken. No egg rolls and the breading was thick, well cooked (not greasy) but the flavor was missing for me. The sauce was very good. Nothing wrong, just not my favorite.”

“With seven party rooms spread over three floors, large-scale private banqueting is the order of the day at Golden Phoenix. One of Chinatown’s largest restaurants, it’s perfect for weddings, corporate events and birthdays. But they also cater for smaller numbers, so you can dine solo if you so wish. Either way, the regal décor with golden-dragon-adorned walls lends a ceremonial touch, fit for an emperor. Food-wise, Golden Phoenix serves authentic Cantonese cuisine, with an extensive dim sum and à la carte menu. Here, you can feast on succulent Lobster with Ginger and Spring Onions, rich and juicy Pork Chop with Red Bean Curd Paste, sweet and refreshing Fried ‘Pi Pa’ Bean Curd with Crab Meat, and crunchy Prawns with Cashew Nuts.”
