About Sha-xian Delicacies

Sha-xian Delicacies is a Chinese restaurant at 7 Gerrard St in the centre of Chinatown, London, serving deep fried squirrel fish alongside handmade dumplings and a Chinese breakfast menu. Breakfast runs to congee and other morning dishes, so the kitchen covers more than the usual lunch and dinner service. Dumplings come steamed, and xiao long bao sit within a wider dim sum list. Long tables fill a spacious dining area, which suits groups and family-style meals, and set menus are available for those ordering together. Wine and cocktails are on offer for the table. The restaurant is a short walk from the tube station, and it takes walk-ins.

Customer Review Summary

Dumplings draw the most praise here, from juicy, generously filled steamed dumplings and handmade xiao long bao to a shrimp, egg and chive dumpling a Christmas Day diner called delicious. Close behind is the deep fried squirrel fish, which two reviewers who lived in China say tastes just like home, and one also singles out the duck. Others mention crispy sesame prawn toast, egg custard, and breakfast yeow tew with hot soy milk. Reviewers describe friendly, welcoming staff, fair prices, and long tables that suit groups, though one finds alcoholic drinks a bit expensive. Service draws mixed views. One reviewer calls it fast and no nonsense, which may seem to lack warmth but gets the job done, while another found it pathetic, with the server not naming the dishes and the food okayish. A breakfast diner reports the deep fried dough arrived cold and the wonton tasted weird, leaving the steamed xiao long bao as the only alright dish.

“For breakfast, the deep fried dough is cold. And the wonton tastes weird…The only alright one is the steamed Xiaolongbao. Won’t recommend.”

“Fresh handmade dumplings and xiao long bao. If you're going in for breakfast, they do yeow tew, congee and freshly ground soy milk. Yeow tew was crispy on the outside and light/airy inside. Perfect paired with hot unsweetened soy milk! Expect fast, no nonsense service which may seem like they lack warmth but they get the job done.”

“Very nice food with an extensive menu that caters to most tastes. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. There is also outdoor seating available, making it a great place to relax, enjoy your meal, and watch the world go by. Alcoholic drinks are a bit expensive, but that is the norm for most of the restaurants in the area. Highly recommended.”

“The food was excellent. I ordered the deep fried squirrel fish, fried rice, xialong bao ...and they were all delicious. As someone who lives in China for almost a decade. It tasted exactly the same. I highly recommend this place.”
