About The Morning Star
The Morning Star is a real ale pub at 11 Greetwell Gate in Lincoln, on the edge of the Cathedral Quarter and a short walk from Bailgate and the cathedral. Four regular cask ales and two rotating ales are served on hand pull, with lagers, gins and spirits alongside. The award-winning garden at the rear is spacious, with both undercover and sunny areas, and it hosts live music. Inside, the pub is a small-roomed, old-style local with an open fire. No food is served beyond bar snacks such as crisps, and customers can bring their own food or order it in. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the real ale, praising a varied selection of cask and hand pulled ales that one describes as extremely well-kept, with four regular and two rotating on offer, alongside lagers, gin and spirits. The rear beer garden comes close behind, described as spacious, a sun trap, newly refurbed, with undercover and sunny areas and planting that gave one visitor a Mediterranean feel. Friendly staff and locals come up repeatedly, along with an open fire, comfortable seating and background noise low enough for conversation. Dogs are welcomed, according to one reviewer. Food is a recurring gap: no meals are served beyond bar snacks, though one notes you could bring or order your own. Complaints are few but specific. One reviewer was told the Guinness had run out, then watched a regular served a pint a few minutes later and came away feeling the pub was not for tourists. Another found one pint tasted dodgy after a great one on Easter Sunday, and could not see the advertised cathedral views. Crisps that were in date earned a mention.

“Decided to pop into this ‘off the beaten track’ pub with my wife on a visit to historic Lincoln at lunchtime between Christmas and New Year. The pub wasn’t busy and I asked the rather reserved barman for a pint of Guinness. He said they’d run out it so slightly disappointed but accepting it, I had a pint of John Smiths instead and we sat down. About ten minutes later, a group of what I presume were more frequent customers, as they appeared to be on first name terms with the barman, came in the pub and when one asked for a Guinness, I watched in amazement as the barman quite happily poured him one out. I couldn’t quite believe it! Now it may be the case that miraculously a delivery of Guinness was made in that ten minutes but I saw no evidence of this. We soon left however and I stared at the pint of Guinness and then the barman as we left, just to see if he could sense my annoyance. I don’t think he did. I thought about asking him but I couldn’t be bothered. I just put it down to it being a local’s local and not one for ‘tourists’ ☹️”

“A proper no-frills local boozer with very friendly staff and locals. Four regular cask ales and two rotating ales. The beer was extremely well-kept and the glasses spotless. Super dog friendly and a great open fire. Well worth a (short) detour off the tourist trail.”

Highlights
“The Morning Star is a traditional pub situated in the heart of uphill Lincoln, just 200m from the Lincoln Cathedral and the historic Bailgate and Castle Square areas. An authentic and atmospheric real ale pub within two minutes walk of the main tourist area, or with ample car parking for driviers, makes The Morning Star an ideal stop off for a refreshing drink. This pleasant and almost undiscovered Lincoln pub is off the beaten track making it a must visit to escape the hustle and bustle of the city whilst sampling a selection of real ales, listening to live music, and relaxing in the award winning beer garden!”
