About The Star & Garter

On Warwick St in Leamington Spa, The Star & Garter is a gastropub open daily, with the kitchen serving food from brunch through to dinner. The menu is pub-style British and built on locally sourced ingredients, with pheasant pie and fish and chips among the mains. A Sunday roast and a specials menu run alongside it. Vegetarian and vegan options are available, and the kitchen accommodates dairy allergens. Groups can book the private dining room for lunches and parties, and its French windows open onto a private terrace, so a party has its own outdoor space. The pub is part of the Peach Pubs group.

Customer Review Summary

The Sunday roast draws the most mentions, with diners praising generous portions and the beef, and describing staff who offer extra Yorkshires and roast potatoes when they check back. Close behind is the chicken schnitzel with garlic butter, praised by two reviewers, alongside pheasant pie, fish and chips, guinea fowl and a lamb scotch egg with crispy kale. One diner accepted an offer to upgrade to wagyu and called it cooked to perfection. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, chefs handled dairy allergens well, and reviewers note vegetarian and vegan options, dogs being welcome and an upstairs private room used for a family lunch. The complaints centre on service. One reviewer describes a rude, dismissive food runner, a dirty table and floor, a refused request to move tables and plates slammed down. Another found food slow on a busy Saturday with no acknowledgement of a big birthday, and one thought the food and Sunday dinner not so great.

“Fabulous spot for a Roast! We booked the upstairs private room at the Star & Garter for a family (and dog) friendly Sunday Lunch. Our group was very well looked after by the team and all the food was delicious. Generous portions, plus extra roasties and Yorkshires - highly recommend for a Sunday Roast!”

“I came here yesterday with my parents. The manager and our waitress were both lovely and the food was good. Unfortunately, our entire experience was ruined by the food runner who served us. She was incredibly rude, surly and openly condescending from the moment we sat down. Our table and the floor around it were dirty with food from the previous guests. When I politely asked if we could move tables, she abruptly said “no” in a very rude tone. I then tried to ask if the floor could at least be cleaned, but she cut across me mid-sentence to talk to another guest, which was extremely dismissive and unprofessional. When our food arrived, she practically slammed the plates down with a clear attitude. The way she interacted with us made it feel like we were an inconvenience rather than paying customers. Her behaviour was hostile and completely inappropriate for someone working in hospitality. It’s a shame because every other member of staff we encountered was pleasant and welcoming, and I’m sure if we had asked anyone else about moving tables they would have helped. Service was also quite slow for the price, and I noticed other tables being offered extra items with their roast while we were largely ignored. The food itself was good, but the behaviour of this one staff member made the experience unpleasant and really let the restaurant down.”

“A great spot for a Sunday roast, the beef was Delishious. If you can secure a spot on the balcony in the late afternoon sun it’s lovely.”
