About Anchor - Hullbridge
Anchor - Hullbridge is a pub on Ferry Rd in Hockley, set on the south bank of the River Crouch. Its private riverside pods come with heaters and music, and guests can reserve them for a space of their own by the water. The Orangery is the restaurant area, with views across the river. The menu includes roasts, risotto and fish and chips, and bar food is ordered at the bar, where a wait to order is common when it gets busy. A car park sits on site. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the riverside pods, where diners describe sitting with heaters and music, a good buffer from noise and wind, and views over the river for anniversaries, a family Easter meal and an evening with friends. Food gets close behind: paninis with a side salad dressing, chunky chips, roasts, risotto and fish and chips are all praised, and one reviewer notes the menu suited a gluten allergy and vegetarians. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, with nothing too much trouble, and one hen party describes smooth planning. Dogs were offered treats, and one couple received a free glass of prosecco for their anniversary. The criticism is narrower but specific: one reviewer found the acoustics awful, the chairs oversized and hard to get out of, the service incredibly slow and some portions small for the price. Another found the bar queue slow behind a large coffee order, and a rump steak came out a little over but tasty. One reviewer suggests booking the Orangery restaurant, and a card-operated dispenser lets visitors feed the swans by the river.

“I went with a friend to Hullbridge for lunch today. The Anchor is a Jewel in the Crown of Hullbridge. Good food is good food wherever l dine. The Savoy The Ritz The Dorchester the food is the same as other restaurants - what makes it special is the Service! This same Service we experienced today at The Anchor. Our Server was Holly. Holly absolutely made our lunch special- she interacted with us, she was friendly and very professional. Whatever we asked for was absolutely no trouble. I asked to see The Manager to express my appreciation. Gary came really quickly he was charming friendly and professional. He shared with us some appropriate personal background and it was obvious Holly and Gary had the same well learned professional friendly approach to Hospitality Sector. Holly moved from table to table subtlety changing how she met each customer. Only one word - Excellent!!!!”

“We booked an area of the Anchor for my hen do and I can honestly say that the staff went above and beyond to make my day special. The food was amazing, the drinks kept flowing and nothing was too much trouble. From the moment I booked the event until the very end of the evening, everything went so smoothly. All I can say is thank you so much to Gary and all the staff for making it a day I will remember for a long time”

“Our first visit here and it won't be our last! Very well positioned on the south bank of the river Crouch, with a large outdoor seating area. Good selection of alcohol free drinks. We had the brunch - 2 paninni although the portions were large and if it's just a light snack then we'd probably share next time. Came with a side salad with a superb oil, balsamic and maple syrup dressing. Delicious. And the side order of chunky chips! Honestly, the best chips we've tasted for years. Staff were very friendly but it can get really busy and if you get stuck behind someone ordering 4 coffees (we did!) you might have to wait a bit. We had the bar food, if you want the restaurant then that's the Orangery and it's recommended that you book. The menu looked pretty good. Plenty of parking because if the car park is full the public car park is a minute's walk away and free. All in all, a really enjoyable meal and well worth a visit if you are in the area.”

“We had a lovely family meal on Easter Sunday as belated 2x birthday celebrations and were booked in one of the pods. Very lucky it was a glorious sunny day but the pod kept us warm from the strong wind. Our waitress was so friendly and accommodating, she is a real asset just wish I got her name so she would get rrecognition. Food was delicious, we had a mix of roasts, risotto and fish and chips and all raved about our chosen dish. Was lovely seeing all the young families get together for Easter fun and while we could hear the music, the pod offered a good buffer to noise so that we could always hear eachother clearly (the reason we booked it). Have been before and great to have a consistently great experience. Recommend!”
