About The Quays

The Quays is a pub on Festival Leisure Park in Basildon, run as part of a chain that pairs a comfort-food kitchen with a regular events line-up. A DJ, Quays fest, Kids fest and live football screenings give groups and families reasons to visit beyond a meal. The menu includes a 12oz rump steak with chips, peas and onion rings, a beef roast with roast potatoes and stuffing, and a mixed grill. A Monday deal applies to the rump steak meal, and a dessert menu follows the mains.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers split on the food, and value for money runs through both sides. Several call the mains decent and reasonably priced, with a lively, family-friendly feel and a good sauce selection, and one describes a weekend of DJ, Quays fest, kids fest and an England match run by helpful staff. Others report letdowns: a rump steak that arrived looking burnt with undercooked fat, a beef roast with chewy meat and hard roast potatoes, a mixed grill that tasted of old oil, and a cheesecake still mainly frozen. Service draws the most complaints. Several say staff seemed not to want to be there, nobody checked on meals, plates came out one at a time, and dirty plates were left on tables. Two reviewers describe a toilet with no tissue and a broken seat, plus outdoor tables covered in glasses with knives on the floor while a family with a young child sat down. Both say the staff told them they were unlucky.

“Went here on Sunday, father's day, thought it be nice to get out with the mother in law. She likes coming here. Didn't seem to be many staff but we did receive our meal in good time. Foid was lovely as it always is. The only criticism I have is that the staff didnt seem to want to be there in my opinion. I have a blue light card and although it says that they accept blue light card it was not on this occasion. Reason its fathers say. Not a good reason really. It wasn't busy either. I accept on bank holidays but father's day is not a bank holiday. Not feeling great about coming back again.”

“Decent food at a great price. Most main dishes were around or under £15. A lively environment, great for families. Very good drinks and sauce selection.”

“I really don’t know what’s happened here, lack of staff as always, we felt the staff didn’t really want to be there, Food was ok, but came out one plate at a time? Took ages to actually come to the table too. We ordered desserts then waited for our table to be cleared, from our mains. There’s no atmosphere or friendliness there anymore? Shame as used to have a nice meal and atmosphere. The new manager seems nice but something is letting this pub down.”

“No toilet tissue and broken toilet seat. When I told the staff member was told I was unlucky. Outside the tables were untidy full with glasses and the was knives left on the floor. There was a family sitting at a table where there was knives on the floor with a young child. When spoke to staff was told they was busy but there was only handful of people in the bar at the time. Rude staff when I told them about outside area. Made to fill unwelcome. Untidy sitting area. Shame as was told this was a nice place Wish I could leave a no star review.”
