Quick info
About The Old Windmill
The Old Windmill is a pub on S Hanningfield Rd in Chelmsford, with wood fires, flagstone floors and low 18th-century beams inside. The bar sits at the centre of the building, and local ales are on tap. Outside, the garden has a large covered tent area strung with fairy lights, and the pub holds garden barbecues there. The kitchen serves crispy shredded duck loaded fries, a sticky beef salad and a steak burger with chips. Dogs are welcome, and reservations are required. Air conditioning keeps the inside comfortable in warm weather, and the pub has plenty of parking.

Customer Review Summary
Crispy shredded duck is the most repeated draw, whether as loaded fries singled out as the stand out item or as a hot duck wrap with golden chips. Close behind are a steak sandwich with thick-cut chips, a sticky beef salad one reviewer orders every time, a salmon dish, and a chocolate orange tart with blood orange ice cream. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive, and the garden, the safari-style tent and the 18th-century beams draw praise alongside local ales on tap and plenty of parking. The criticism is concentrated in a few reviews. One says both visits meant long gaps between courses and a veal pasta with next to no meat or sauce. Another found the steak burger tasted frozen, waited a long time for extra pita with the hummus, and noted very limited vegetarian options. A tall visitor mentions the low beams. In one standout moment, staff let a group bring in a cake for an 80th birthday, carried it to the table and helped sing.

“Been here twice and both times the same bad experience. Food is painfully slow both times waiting atleast an hour between courses then the quality of food wasn't great, I had the veil pasta and there was next to no meat or sauce and portion was smaller then the kids. Service was very sparse also. It's just a nice place to be that is all.”

“I had booked a table outside but it was just too hot. Staff happily moved us indoors. Service was wonderful. Very friendly and quick. Food was delicious. Sticky beef salad is always my go to. Absolutely delicious every time. Thank you”

“Wonderful meal at this lovely pub. The staff were so helpful and extremely kind letting us bring in a cake for our dear friend to help celebrate her 80th birthday. They kindly brought it to the table and helped sing! The staff couldn’t have done more. The salmon dish I ate was delicious. Would definitely recommend this place.”

“The food was absolutely delicious. Cooked perfectly and beautifully presented. The staff were welcoming and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The location was lovely with a real country pub feel. We will definitely be going back and would recommend."”

“We ordered the hummus and pita bread to start of which we shared (2 people), it was nice enough but only came out with seven very small strips of pita with way too much hummus. Asked for some more pitta from the waitress and had to wait over 20 minutes for it. I had a steak burger, was okay as I was very hungry but the quality wasn’t there, tasted frozen and the chips weren’t great but edible. My sister is a vegetarian and there were very limited options but she went for the cheese and leek quiche which she enjoyed. Drinks all okay. Has a nice outdoor seating layout with fairy lights and a big cover.”

“The Old Windmill is a classic English country pub, with wood fires, flagstone floors and oak beams, and the bar sits happily at the heart of the building. Although it's not for us to say, we think it's an absolute gem.”
