About Chaophraya
Chaophraya is a Thai restaurant in Glasgow, based at The Townhouse on Buchanan Street in a building that was once a gentleman's club and the Royal Conservatory of Music. The original ballroom keeps its high plaster-carved ceilings, now set alongside golden Thai deities and Thai-themed decor. The building also holds a VIP whisky bar and several separate dining areas. The menu includes green curry with chicken, spring rolls and sharing small plates. A street food cooking experience teaches Tom Yum soup, and guests receive a welcome drink and a Chaophraya apron to take home. The food is halal, and a private dining room is available for groups.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the Thai cooking classes, where guests make Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai and then eat them, with free beer and prosecco or a welcome drink. Close behind is the restaurant itself, a heritage building with Thai themed decor that diners call elegant and fabulous, and staff described as friendly, helpful and welcoming. At the table, diners name the spring rolls, fried prawn cakes, Pad Thai, Basil Fried Rice and Mango Sticky Rice, along with sharing small plates and sorbet. The recurring complaint is the mains and soups. One Thai diner found the Tom Kha Gai pale and flavourless with small portions, and the green curry sweet with cucumber, while another found a green curry blank, with raw peas and undercooked chicken. Others report slow service, drinks that took an age, food and plates that could have been warmer, and a service charge that was never mentioned. Class guests leave with their Chaophraya aprons.

“Went with friends for lunch on 5pm.voucher. Had issues inputting voucher code. Had to phone restaurant and wait thru 5 minutes of rubbish before call was answered. Lunch was oK food could have been warmer. Serving plates could have been warmer. The restaurant decor is absolutely fabulous, extraordinary, but wasn't overly comfortable hestwise. Our table was beside entrance. All the place needs is a bit of warmth. Staff very friendly .Service was slow, drinks took an age. I declined service charge( which was never mentioned anywhere). Great potential, but needs comments addressed”

“Pros - Great Ambience. - Great Service. Annie was great in her service. The lady and the guy at the reception were great too. - Great Appetizers. We had Vegetarian soup and Chicken Appetizers. Both were great in taste and quantity. We also had Wine and Beer. Quantity was good. Cons - Mains were not that appealing as we found them to be less spicy. We ordered the Chicken Green Thai Curry. It had raw peas and cut vegetables but the curry was blank. The chicken in it was not that well cooked.”

“I usually don't write reviews but I think the restaurant deserves to know what to improve here. When walking into the place you get the feeling of a bit of a luxury thai fine dining experience. The personnel are very nice and welcoming which is why I give this a 2 star experience. Me and my wife ordered "Tom Kha Gai" (Coconut style soup with chicken) and Gang Keaw Wan (Green curry with chicken). As thai I can say that when you eat Tom Kha Gai you want the mix of Coconut flavour mixed with lime, palm sugar and galangal which gives you a flavour kick when you taste it to eat with rice. The soup was very pale and had pretty much no flavour unfortunately. Also the portion was very small.. it was just 5-6 small pieces of chicken in the soup. Green curry was mostly sweet and had no "green curry" paste taste and also there was cucumber which never is added into a green curry dish originally. Also its missing the basil flavour here as well. If you're outside Thailand usually you can compensate with aubergine. Also in this dish I do think it was quite small. Jasmine rice was good though, but you get quite a lot so make sure you don't order too many here. Also the spring rolls was good. I've tried a lot of different thai restaurants and I think for the price and what we got I can't say it was a great food experience. You can do better! But big creds to the service.”

“We did a Street food cooking experience, it was great fun. We were shown how to make Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai. The chef Nu was brilliant. Our food turned out lovely. We had a welcome drink on arrival and got to take our Chaophraya aprons home. Great idea for a gift.”
