About The Citizen Glasgow

The Citizen Glasgow is a Scottish restaurant and bar at 24 St Vincent Place in Glasgow, set in the former offices of the Evening Citizen newspaper. The building is Victorian and keeps its original features. Guests enter through the bar, and the quieter restaurant area sits at the back, with the dining space split across two levels. The menu pairs modern Scottish cooking with classic dishes, and starters include haggis bon bons with whisky cream and bacon butter Shetland mussels with sourdough. Roast sirloin of Scottish beef arrives with Yorkshire pudding, and a steak pie sits alongside it for those after something familiar. The drinks list covers cocktails, including a house Citizen cocktail, as well as a selection of wine and fresh tank beer.

Customer Review Summary

Haggis bon bons with whisky cream are the dish reviewers raise most, with one visitor ranking them above everything else eaten on a Scottish holiday. Close behind are the butter mussels with sourdough, the steak pie, and a Sunday roast sirloin with Yorkshire pudding and crispy roasties. Diners also mention a Glayva chicken liver pate, sticky toffee pudding, and cocktails, and describe the building's original Victorian features and a busy bar at the front with a quieter restaurant behind. Service is mostly called friendly, though one reviewer found a waiter rude, and another waited so long that drinks arrived near the end of the meal and one dish came out much later. One diner found the beef pie extremely salty, and the dish was offered as a replacement, but the diner lost their appetite and ordered nothing else. A few call prices a little high, and several say weekends are busy enough that reservations are a must. One birthday diner received a plate of treats with a message.

“My mum and I popped in for a little afternoon cocktail on a girls day out and we were so impressed. We have been to The Citizen many times before so knew the vibe and atmosphere were great but this time the service was exceptional. Our waiter James was so helpful, he was able to recommend the best perfect serve for my mum based on her tastes and allowed me to order off menu for a classic cocktail. The bar and restaurant were both busy but James didn’t ever make us feel rushed nor did we have to chase anyone down to order again. James was an absolute credit to The Citizen team and our drinks were perfect, so thank you also to the bar staff. Definitely pop in for a gorgeous drink with fantastic service.”

“Nice venue with a pleasant atmosphere, although it was quite noisy during our visit. The food was good overall, but nothing particularly memorable. The sirloin steak was flavorful and probably the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, the waiter who served us came across as somewhat rude, which affected the overall experience.”

“In for the first time for dinner. Service was first class, staff obviously well trained. Had Glayva chicken liver pate, followed by butter mussels. Both dishes were excellent and the sauce/broth with the mussels was amazing. Just superb. The interior is very elegant and the restaurant was busy and the atmosphere was great. Citizen cocktail was delicious. Was my birthday and the plate of treats with birthday message was a nice touch. Thanks.”

“Out of everything I ate during my holiday to Scotland - the haggis bon bons I ate here at The Citizen are still number 1. We were a group of 5 and had dinner here after arriving in Glasgow our first night. We were fortunate that they were able to seat us given we had no reservation and the restaurant was extremely busy. The ambience is beautiful - so stunning and classic. The drink and dinner menu is comprehensive - great for a group of different budgets and preferences. The food and drinks here were all great and the staff were so friendly. Unfortunately it was fairly slow, our drinks did not come out until practically the end of the meal and my husband’s dish came out so much later. Despite that, it was worth the wait, I would just wait to return on a day where I wasn’t so tired after a plane trip hah.”

“We spent a Sunday afternoon at The Citizen and ordered the Roast Sirloin of Scottish beef with Yorkshire pudding, crispy roasties, mash and rich gravy… the portion was massive and cooked perfectly. Starters were just as good. Haggis bon bons with whisky cream, bacon butter Shetland mussels with sourdough, and we finished with sticky toffee pudding and their mocha edition dessert.😍😋 The place was busy but the service was great and the cocktails were delicious! Highly recommend it!”
