About Halloumi Glasgow

Halloumi Glasgow is a Greek restaurant in Glasgow, at 161 Hope St, open daily. The menu follows a mezze style of smaller plates meant for sharing, with both cold and hot dishes. Halloumi gives the restaurant its name and appears in a halloumi and pomegranate salad, while a chicken gyro covers the heartier end of the list. Tzatziki, hummus and warm pitta suit the table-sharing format. The Greek salad is made with vegetables and olive oil and no lettuce. Desserts round out the food. The cocktails and mocktails are named after Greek figures such as Hera and Artemis, so the drinks list carries the same theme as the kitchen, and non-drinkers get the same naming treatment as everyone else. The wine list includes Greek bottles, among them a Greek Merlot.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the mezze-style small plates, with the chicken gyro and souvlaki, the halloumi and pomegranate salad, and loaded fries with halloumi named repeatedly as highlights. Diners also praise the tzatzki, hummus with warm pitta, pan fried sea bream, and a Greek salad with no lettuce, just fresh vegetables and olive oil. Close behind is the welcome, with several describing friendly staff who found a table quickly, explained the menu and advised on choices. The Hera cocktail, the Artemis mocktail and the Greek wine also earn mentions. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the food so salty that a lot of water was needed, and felt the small plates were not matched by what the bill came to. The same diner says the acoustics left everyone shouting over each other. Another reports a service charge added to the bill without being mentioned and says the service did not justify it. One reviewer wished a Greek beer were on draught instead of Peroni. Several note the restaurant was busy, and one closes on a first-time visitor to Scotland who was thanked with a bottle of Greek Merlot by the managers.

“Really fantastic food, tasting super fresh. The chicken gyro was spiced just right and tasty. The Greek salad had no lettuce, just very fresh veggies and olive oil - delicious. The hummus and pita was perfect. Exceeded expectations for lunch place. Really loved it!”

“Having been here before, went in expecting it to be great. Left feeling disappointed due to a number of reasons- the main recollection was the food was so salty that a lot of water was needed afterwards. The bill was £70 which having travelled to London directly afterwards is equitable to an excellent meal there but this just didn’t compare in quality or quantity with the food being nice but small plates for what you pay. The acoustics also need worked on as everyone was shouting over each other, as much as I enjoyed hearing about my neighbouring tables MOT struggles, it didn’t make for the most relaxing meal!”

“Great restaurant with good service. The prices are restricted. Its a pity that they didnt serve a Greek beer on draught and not Peroni!”

“Visiting Glasgow and called in without a reservation. Very friendly staff showed us to a table immediately. Great menu of cold and hot dishes. The halloumi and pomegranate salad was amazing! So was the chicken souvlaki. All the dishes were fresh and tasty. It’s a very popular restaurant so was busy. Delighted we managed to get a table and will definitely return. Loved it!”

“The gyros was really good and full of flavour, so the food itself was definitely the highlight of the visit. Unfortunately, the service was not that good. On top of that, a service charge was added to the bill without it being mentioned. If a restaurant chooses to add a service charge automatically, I think the service should be excellent and reflect that extra cost.”
