About Cranachan Cafe

Cranachan Cafe is a Scottish restaurant in Glasgow, on the 2nd floor, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Breakfast centres on a square sausage and tattie scone roll, with a Full Scottish Breakfast of poached eggs, black pudding, back bacon, sausage, potato scone and sourdough toast for a larger plate. The namesake cranachan comes as both a dessert and a cake, a Scottish sweet that sits on the menu next to the savoury rolls. Afternoon tea brings sandwiches and sweet treats, and the kitchen takes group bookings for it. Lunch runs from soup of the day to sandwiches. The room is spacious, though a wait can form when it is full.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers are split on the breakfast, and the full Scottish is the dish they raise most. Praise centers on the poached eggs, the bacon in one account, and the black pudding in another, while a larger share call it a letdown: a thin sausage, half a small tomato, a tiny potato scone, and toast that was hard to cut or served as only half a slice on the vegetarian platter. One diner said the sausage did not match the butcher's sausage described on the menu. Eggs Royale gets good words from two reviewers, and a square sausage and tattie scone roll is called fantastic. The Cranachan dessert earns praise too, and one party was given it as a takeaway when the restaurant was full. Afternoon tea for a large group is described as generous, with a good choice of sandwiches and sweet treats. Staff are often called friendly, though one breakfast review found service lacking and a few mention the added service charge. One diner remarked that a home made fruit scone was slightly dry.

“Popped in for Breakfast, first time I've had Eggs Royale and this was absolutely delicious. My partners square sausage and tattie scone roll was also fantastic. Great service from the staff and the cafe is in a really interesting setting.”

“We ordered vegetarian breakfast and were surprised (and slightly amused) to find only half a slice of toasted bread with each platter. Strange that we had to order extras to enjoy a slice each. My partner found the poached eggs a tad overdone but I thought they were fine. Overall, I felt that the location and the ambience are doing much of the heavy-lifting for the business, and I would've loved to see better quality or well-portioned foods or more interesting menu options.”

“Lovely and spacious place with a variety of food on offer. Staff is super friendly and welcoming. Plenty of space and kids friendly.”

“We both had a full breakfast. It wasn't the best to be honest. We where a bit disappointed. The sausage was not a butchers sausage as described on the menu. It was weird looking and tasted horrible. The bacon was delicious right enough and they cooked the poached eggs great. The black pudding was a bit watery and tasted weird too. The coffee was nice but a bit cold. The service was lacking. Hate leaving a bad review but it wasn't up to much. Would not return or recommend”

“How on earth is this place averaging 4.2 stars. What an awful culinary experience. The so-called Full Scottish Breakfast. The menu makes it sound enticing, but what you get is bang average and affected by shrinkflation, and not worth £15.95 by any means. The poached eggs were good, but that’s where it ends. One sausage, thinner than my index finger. Half a small tomato. The sourdough was stale and without exaggeration I didn’t want to risk chipping a tooth biting into it and the knife couldn’t make any headway either. The back bacon was dry, hard, and fatty. The potato scone was about 4mm high and about half the size of a mobile phone. There were a scattering of mushrooms and a tiny portion of beans. The black pudding was actually quite good. The service was quick but not very warm/friendly and wasn’t offered a receipt so I could check what I was charged was correct, which I guess it was if they added a service charge. My friend had Eggs Royale and to be fair that looked quite good and she said was very good. In essence, if charging £15.95 for breakfast, please use better ingredients and maybe a bit more on the plate. We spent just over £40.00 for this breakfast and honestly, I wish we’d spent it elsewhere.”
