About China Blue

On Renfield St in Glasgow, China Blue serves Cantonese and Malaysian dishes across rice and noodle plates, reached up a flight of stairs behind a single street-level door. The menu runs to 45 items on the printed list, spanning roasted duck with boiled rice, char siu with boiled rice, and black bean beef with boiled rice alongside chicken and combination plates. Diners set on the roast duck need to phone or order it a day ahead, as it's prepared to order rather than held ready. Tables carry paper covers under linen napkins, and multiple staff attend each table through the meal. Reservations are recommended, though walk-ins are also seated without a wait, even on evenings when a queue later forms at the door. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays. Toilets are found up a further flight of stairs from the dining room.

Customer Review Summary

Roast duck draws repeat mentions as a highlight, though a few reviewers note it must be phoned in a day ahead and one found it sold out on a first visit. Close behind, dishes like the Malaysian laksa wanton, mapo tofu, deep fried sea bass, and pork with salted vegetable win praise as tasty and well marinated, and several single out the vegetable chow mein, sweet and sour prawns Hong Kong style, and a shared starter platter with won ton and satay. Service is repeatedly called attentive and friendly, with staff bringing multiple servers to a table. The climb up narrow stairs to reach the dining room, and toilets described as clean but antiquated, come up often as a quirk. A few complain of mistakes: one reviewer's order was brought wrong and the restaurant declined to fix it, another found the chips overcooked, and one describes a manager disputing a vegetarian-labelled dish before eventually apologising and giving half off. Most still say they'll return, often for special occasions or before a show.

“First time dining in the China Blue and won’t be my last, food was lovely with good portion size and very reasonable prices, service was also excellent and attentive without being intrusive. There was a lot of Chinese diners and that ia an indication that food is of a high standard.”

“I always just eat spare ribs and a beef curry. This place did not disappoint. It’s up stairs so the entrance is just a door so watch out for it.”

“Went here for the first time tonight before going to the theatre. Was hard to find tucked away between KFC and a bookies but so glad we found it. Lots of stairs to climb so not suitable for disabled which is a shame because it’s a nice place. The food was lovely and the service was really good too. Prices were pretty good too for a restaurant in town. We didn’t have a reservation but the gave us a table anyway and they don’t hurry you even though by the time we were half way through our food there was a queue waiting to be seated. Also I was with my cousin who eats like a sparrow so they didn’t blink an eye at us getting a starter each and sharing a main course. Lots of Chinese people came to eat and shared their meals to and that usually tells you how good it is. The atmosphere was nice too. The only thing I can say is about the toilets. They are up yet another flight of stairs from the restaurant and it was quite creepy going up, the toilets were very clean but also very antiquated and not really nice to look at but the rest made up for this. I would recommend a visit if looking for a nice Chinese meal while in town and I will definately go back again.”
