About The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn is a pub in Colchester at 152 Maldon Rd, with a garden that holds a pond and fish. The kitchen makes pies in house, including a steak pie, and serves a roast lunch in big portions. A vegan menu runs alongside the meat dishes, and the staff are trained in allergens, so dietary needs are part of how the team serves the table. Dogs are welcome. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the roast and Sunday lunch, praising the big portions that arrive piping hot, with one saying they couldn't finish theirs. Close behind is the homemade steak pie, called lush and very good, and the staff, described repeatedly as welcoming and friendly. One reviewer says the team handled allergens and dietary needs well, and another notes a good vegan menu, along with a children's meal that a nine year old enjoyed. Service is called quick and good, and the garden with its pond and fish gets mentions, as does a pint of bitter. The caveats are small but specific. The vegan gravy served with the pie was called tasteless by two diners, one reviewer wanted parsnips with the Sunday lunch, and another found it odd that no wine list was offered. One diner who hadn't booked was still found a table, while another sat in the garden because the inside was fully booked.

“Lovely little find after a traumatic morning delivery driver hitting our VW mirror knocking it completely off. The food was delicious and the pub had a really nice tranquility about it with the pond and fish in the garden area.”

“We choose this place as my friend had her dog with us. The staff were so welcoming and made such a fuss of Rosie(the dog)gave us a lovely quiet spot we're Rosie settled in. We then sorted out food and my friend was very happy at the Great vegan menu offered, I myself settled for a lush home made pie delicious 😋. The only negative was the gravy! They said it was vegan(why I couldn't have proper gravy with my pie I don't know) however even my friend wasn't impressed and agreed it was tasteless. Nothing that can't be sorted and we shall definitely visit again 😊”
