About The Railway Tavern Kelvedon
The Railway Tavern Kelvedon is a pub at 182 High St in Colchester, run by the same family for over 35 years. Its tables face the River Blackwater, so a meal here comes with a view over the water. The kitchen cooks homemade traditional pub food, including fish and chips and a beef short rib, and the menu also carries vegan and vegetarian options. Orders are placed at the bar. Dogs are welcome, which suits walkers stopping in with a pet. The train station is within walking distance.

Customer Review Summary
Many reviewers come for the river, with riverside tables where diners watch ducks, fish and damselflies and call the views beautiful. The food earns praise too: the beef short rib, gyoza and deep fried pickles are called delicious, one vegan diner raved about crispy chips and a burger offered in vegetarian or vegan versions, and others mention generous portions. Quality is uneven, though. One review found chips undercooked, and another found the starters too uniform to seem handmade and only average. Salads shown on the website were unavailable, desserts were limited to chocolate dishes, and service is described as good if a little slow. The sharpest complaint came from a table told the short ribs had run out after ordering, then served soggy salt and chilli chicken, stringy calamari and fish and chips with puddles of water under the fish. A refund for those dishes was issued by a man described as lovely and apologetic.

“Good location, seating outside by flowing river with ducks! Chips undercooked. Salads shown on website no available in October (it was a warm day...). Limited desserts - chocolate dishes only.”

“Fantastic day had a fabulous meal I had Ham Egg and Chips. Only problem I could moan about was condiments could be simplified a bit.”

“The river view is definitely worth it. Clear water with fish(perch or roach maybe) and beautiful blue damsel flies. The coffee and hot chocolate less so but I guess it's a pub not a cafe.”

“We booked a table for seven o’clock, unsure how the service worked we walked inside to ask what table number was, we asked if there was table service outside we was told yes then a girl said no we need to come to the bar to order. So we proceed to order there we had ordered short ribs then a couple minutes passed and until another person was told by a different waiter did we then got told they didn’t have any so then we proved to order fish and chips. We sat down in which the table hadn’t been cleared and the chairs all feel like it’s a risky to be sat on not stable at all and had glasses and rubbish on it, the salt and chili chicken came in which it was so soggy not crispy at all and had darker marks on the batter.the calamari was okay but still very stringy. The fish and chips have come the bottom of the fish was soggy, the fish literally had puddles of water. We did complain and the man who dealt with this and issued us a refund for the food we had a problem with was so lovely and apologetic about the food, couldn’t fault him for how he handled it.”

“Having seen this place all over social media we decided we needed to try it for ourselves. Lovely setting on a summer's day but unfortunately the food was quite average. The two of us shared a few starters and all looked a bit too uniform to be handmade and although they tasted OK, they were just that unfortunately.”
