About The Inn at Huxley

The Inn at Huxley is a restaurant and bar on Huxley Ln in Chester, owned by a family and set in a building with wooden beams. Carved mice are hidden around the property in the mouse man style, alongside stone and wood carvings, so there is something to look for between courses. The menu includes a black pudding starter and a roast with a beef main. The bar area has settees and soft furnishings. Tables can be booked, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast draws the strongest praise at The Inn at Huxley, with reviewers singling out roast sirloin with crisp, fluffy Yorkshire pudding and a beef main that one diner rated above their grandmother's cooking. Close behind are a black pudding starter, French onion soup, venison with glazed baked carrots, lamb, a Chicken Pakora curry with rice and naan, and a white chocolate panna cotta. Reviewers describe friendly, attentive staff and call the food good value for money. The stone and wood carvings and wooden beams draw praise too, and one couple who held their wedding there says every course was exceptional. The main complaint comes from one Sunday diner who waited a long time for a drinks order to be taken, was not offered sauces with the meal, and saw empty glasses and used plates left on nearby tables, though that diner had no fault to find with the food. Another party was given a little sausage treat for their dog.

“Excellent food, lovely staff, attentive service. Our visit was a Wednesday and relatively early eve so the pub was quiet, however the building/decor are immaculate and high quality.”

“I used to think my granny made an amazing Sunday roast but what I ate today was on another level. Black pudding starter was incredible as was the beef main course. Service was great and even better was that nobody interrupted me half way through each course to ask me if everything was okay. Perfect.”

“We dined on 26/07, table of 2 for Sunday dinner. We were greeted at the entrance to the dining area and seated swiftly by what I can only assume was the manager on shift. Unfortunately this is where the service seemed to begin and end. We sat for 35 minutes waiting for our drinks order to be taken, in the meantime I had gone to the toilet and chanced getting served at the bar, waited 5 minutes and nobody turned up. After our drinks eventually arrived our food order was taken, at this point we had been at the table for 40 minutes. There couldn’t have been more than 12 tables in the whole building and 4 staff on the floor! Food arrived, no offer of sauces. When we asked the young lad he said “oh yeah” as if we had reminded him to ask us. No check back and nothing said when our plates were collected other than if we would like the dessert menu. I actually finished my drink as he was at the table and there was no offer of another drink, my partner had been sat with an empty glass for 15 minutes. Maybe that’s a theme here as the two tables next to us that had left over 45 minutes prior still had all their glasses and dirty plates on the table too. The food itself was actually 10/10 and I couldn’t fault a single thing. Such a shame the service let the place down massively and as such we won’t be returning any time soon. The lady in the blue blouse who seated us seemed to know what she was doing, it’s a shame we only dealt with her the once, but the two young lads and other young girl need training asap.”

“We thought we'd try the Sunday menu. It absolutely blew us away! The food is amazing! The service is really friendly and not rushed. We even had a little sausage treat for our dog too. A wonderful way to spend a sunday afternoon.”
