Quick info
About The Sorting Room Restaurant
The Sorting Room Restaurant is a modern European restaurant on Westgate St in Cardiff, set inside The Parkgate Hotel. Guests are served at the table from a small menu of starters, mains and desserts. A Scotch egg appears among the starters, and Beef Wellington is a recurring main. A lunch set menu is offered for daytime visits. Afternoon tea comes with oven-warm scones, pastries and a beef brisket slider, so the hotel setting covers a lighter sit-down meal as well as lunch and dinner. Cocktails are on the drinks list, including a strawberry cocktail and a maple martini.

Customer Review Summary
Beef Wellington is the dish reviewers raise most, described as tender with crisp pastry that is not soggy, though one diner found it pricey next to other mains. Close behind are the starters, with the scotch egg singled out for its runny yolk and the duck, whether shredded in a spring roll or served three ways with a berry sauce. The maple martini and a strawberry birthday cocktail also earn praise, and one reviewer liked the malbec. Service is described as friendly and attentive, with servers refilling glasses quickly and explaining dishes, though one diner found it slow to start when ordering drinks. Afternoon tea drew praise for scones served straight from the oven and a beef brisket slider, but the pixie orange pastry lacked the promised mousse texture. Another reviewer said the lemon drizzle cake with Eton mess cream did not work. Several celebrating birthdays and anniversaries mention small touches, including a cheesecake with happy birthday written on the plate and complimentary prosecco and dessert.

“Great experience from start to finish. I dined here earlier in the week for my anniversary and it was incredible! The food, the service, the atmosphere were all spot on. We had the lunch set menu and it was such amazing value for money. The food was excellent and of such high quality. The attentiveness from the staff was unmatched and our waiter Massimiliano was one of the best waiters I have ever had. He had eyes across the whole restaurant with my glass being refilled within seconds before I even realised myself it was emptied. He is an asset to the Sorting Room staff. They even went as far as to bring us complimentary prosecco and dessert for our anniversary. I cannot recommend enough.”

“A superb experience for my 1st festive meal of the season. It was fine dining in the most relaxed atmosphere possible. Our server was excellent in his demeanor and very helpful with info necessary to make that final choice. The food was excellent, cooked to perfection with great flavours igniting the palate like a Tango dance. For all that the food, the service and the atmoshpere, it was reasonably priced at just under 50 quid person. If you're thinking about a treat for yourself and that special someone, lunch at the Sorting Room is highly recommended.”

“DINNER: Having read several negative reviews, I arrived a bit skeptical. The first dinner quickly changed my mind, and I ended up returning for a second visit during my stay in Cardiff. Service was outstanding—attentive, professional, and genuinely warm—thanks to my server, Mo (short for Mohammed), who went above and beyond to ensure I was happy with both food and drinks. I started with the duck three ways, complemented by a well-judged berry sauce—delicious. The Beef Wellington was exceptional: a perfectly cooked, high-quality filet wrapped in crisp, non-soggy puff pastry, set over crunchy yet creamy potatoes, with a balanced sauce that tied everything together. Desserts are great, too. Dining here was a pleasure, and I wouldn’t hesitate to return.”

“Wow! The food here is exceptional. They made my birthday so special with little touches and the service from Kim was amazing, such a caring person who went the extra mile to make my birthday wonderful. The beef wellington is a must and the maple martini was one of the best cocktails I’ve had!”

“Really enjoyed our Easter Sunday lunch experience. The hotel and restaurant has a luxury feel to it and the decor is lovely. The staff were very attentive and friendly and made the experience more enjoyable. We had 3 courses and enjoyed every one, all having different things. The malbec wine was delicious and the cocktails also went down well. Would definitely come again.”
