Quick info
About Maison de Bœuf
Maison de Bœuf is a French steak restaurant at 21 Castle Arcade in Cardiff, built around a single main course. The set menu offers steak frites with a side salad and a vegan option, and a second serving of steak and chips comes on the house. Three starters come first, including a twice-baked smoked cheese soufflé. Three classic French desserts finish the meal, with tarte Tatin among them. Live music plays on some evenings. The Petite Maison private dining room seats 8 to 14 and suits groups holding celebrations or business dinners. Reservations are required. Payment is by card only.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the steak frites, calling the steak cooked perfectly and the portions generous, with several praising the house special meat. Close behind are the starters and desserts: the onion soup is likened to ones eaten in Paris, and the apple tart and crème brûlée get praise. Many mark anniversaries and date nights, and describe the romantic, cozy room, friendly servers, and live music that is not too loud to chat over. Several call the menu reasonably priced. The sharpest complaint comes from one reviewer who found the fries frozen and pre-fried, the cheese soufflé and onion soup tasting nearly the same, the bread extremely hard, the side salad plain leaves with vinegar, and the tarte Tatin pastry chewy. One other notes tight spacing between tables. Anniversary diners recall being brought a free dessert.

“1st time visiting Maison de Bœuf today, celebrating our 8 year anniversary - definitely won’t be the last. food was absolutely fantastic, service from our server Lottie was particularly impeccable, all dishes served timely & not rushed. absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a cozy, romantic place to eat in Cardiff. The staff certainly went out of their way to make our night extremely special and they were an absolute credit to our night! Thank you Lottie and the rest of the team who we spoke to tonight!”

“Danica is an absolute credit to this restaurant. My partner and I celebrated our anniversary here (our first time visiting Maison De Boeuf) and it was extremely enjoyable. Beautiful restaurant. We managed to book a table at short notice over the phone with no issues. Danica (our waitress) was super lovely and friendly and nothing was a bother for her. She made us feel very welcome and clearly works so hard to meet customers needs. The steak and drinks we had were delicious! Thank you so much for making our anniversary so special and thank you Danica!”

“The place is amazing. The food was so delicious. I choose their “house special” meat, 10/10. We had so much fun with Lily, she helped us and even gave us a pen for drawing. She made the experience unforgettable. Thank you Lily 💕”

“Had a lovely Saturday lunch there with my family. Food was great, really like their onion soup, as good as those I had in Paris. Dessert and mocktail were lush. Good service. Will go back next time on their live music nights.”

Highlights
“Maison de Bœuf is said to be the most romantic and charming restaurant in Cardiff, a Parisian steak frites bistro in the historic Castle Arcade, a minute from Cardiff Castle and a short walk from the Principality Stadium and Central Station. Our short menu is built around one dish done properly: steak frites with our secret sauce, golden fries and a dressed green salad, with a second serve of steak and chips on the house. Start with French onion soup, escargots or our twice-baked smoked cheese soufflé. Live jazz every Thursday and Sunday evening. The Petite Maison private dining room seats 8 to 14 for celebrations and business dinners. Ideal for date nights, birthdays and anniversaries. Booking recommended, walk-ins welcome. Card only.”
