About The Potted Pig
The Potted Pig is a Welsh restaurant at 27 High St in Cardiff, set in the vaults of an 1855 bank where the brick arches are original. Guests walk down a few stairs to the dining space, and the kitchen has cooked here since 2011. The seasonal menu draws on Welsh producers and comes in two- or three-course options, opening with the potted pig or crispy cockles before mains such as pork belly. Sunday lunch is its own menu, served with vegetables for the table. Feasting menus built around whole suckling pig are made for larger tables, and the vault takes private dining and exclusive hire for up to 16 guests. The restaurant is open daily, with lunch and dinner service.

Customer Review Summary
Lamb is the dish reviewers raise most, from a shoulder slow cooked for eight hours that one diner described as falling apart and melting in the mouth, to a lamb special and a lovely Sunday lunch lamb. Close behind are the pork belly, praised at dinner and in the Sunday roast, and the crispy cockles, called really good by two reviewers. Others single out the Welsh rarebit, arancini, Basque cheesecake, tiramisu, sticky toffee pudding, a Negroni and spicy margaritas. The cozy, warm vault setting and attentive staff come up often, and one reviewer had a table moved after the first room echoed. Not everyone was won over. One diner found the ox cheek croquettes, potted pig and brisket merely fine for what they cost, and another reports a long wait and dry lamb. A third noted service slowing toward the end, which meant skipping dessert. After the dry lamb, the kitchen sent out extra gravy and took the dessert off the bill.

“Modern Welsh/British and French cuisine with local Welsh produce 😋. Menu is seasonal so check before you book. Overall really great food and the cheesecake is to die for 😊 CRISPY COCKLES · Delicately seasoned with salt & vinegar, served with lemon & garlic aioli. SEA BREAM and Mussels with new potatoes and broccoli, served with white wine and mustard sauce BASQUE Cheesecake - Rich, creamy centre with a light burnt exterior. Served with a fragrant honey and orange dressing.”

“Lamb was dry but they gave more gravy which helped, Cockles were really good, dessert was good as well. The customer service was good, they took the dessert price off the bill because of the long wait and dry lamb.”

“My husband and I are from the States and Sunday Roasts are our favorite thing when visiting. We were not disappointed this go around. The beef and pork belly were cooked to perfection, as well as the steamed veggies, potatoes and cheesy cauliflower. The sticky toffee pudding was absolutely delightful. The pudding is tied for #1 for us compared to a restaurant in Oxford. The atmosphere was lovely, the service great, and prices reasonable. Sad to be leaving, otherwise we'd go again this Sunday.”

“The Potted Pig is an experience that should not be missed when one is in Cardiff. Based out of an old Bank vault, one descends a few stairs and leaves all the woes of the world at pavement level. The twinkling lines and whimsical pigs along with an understated elegance, invite one to simply breathe….. The food was superb and the service first class. We at vegetarian ravioli and chicken piccata and both dishes were excellent. The two or three course menu options make a meal interesting, and the choices were good. The toilet doors elicited a chuckle as Mona Lisa has never looked so useful….maybe this is why she is smiling? When in Cardiff go and eat at the Potted Pig and you will not be disappointed.”

“We had a lush afternoon here yesterday, we booked for Sunday lunch & the vibe was amazing. Perfect lighting & a cozy cool atmosphere. At first we were sat in a room to the left of the bar but it was echoing too much for my ears so I requested to relocate, the manager kindly & promptly moved us to a better table which was much appreciated. We had the Sunday lunch menu which was delicious. The arancini to start was so tasty I was gutted I was sharing & my lamb was lovely. I like how generous the veg for the table was with the roasts & the desserts were lovely too. I’m definitely looking forward to trying the rest of the à la carte menu. Oh and The spicy margaritas were beautiful too & Our server Flea was truly fantastic. Will certainly be returning & recommending :)”

“Down a flight of stairs beneath Cardiff High Street, The Potted Pig occupies the vaults of an 1855 bank. The brick arches are original. So is the sense that you have found something. We have cooked here since 2011. The menus change with the season and lean on Welsh producers: lunch, dinner, Sunday lunch, and feasting menus built around whole suckling pig for larger tables. The vault also takes private dining and exclusive hire for up to 16, in a room that does not look like anywhere else in the city. Booking is advised. Walk down and find us at 27 High Street.”
