About The Welsh House Cardiff Restaurant & Bar

The Welsh House Cardiff Restaurant & Bar is a Welsh restaurant at 5A High St in Cardiff, next to the castle. The kitchen works mostly with local produce and builds partnerships with Welsh suppliers. The Sharing Roast For Two puts beef, pork and chicken on the table with bottomless gravy, and the menu also includes traditional Welsh lamb cawl and a leek gratin. The bar pours Brains beer, brewed locally. The traditional-style interior is large and has booths, with room for small or large dining parties, so groups can sit together. The restaurant accepts walk-ins.

Customer Review Summary

Traditional Lamb Cawl is the dish reviewers raise most, described as hearty and flavorful with tender lamb and vegetables, and one diner calls it just right for a rainy day. Leek gratin follows close behind, praised as rich and creamy with a cheesy topping. Others name the fish pie, the ploughman's lunch, a shredded duck bonbon, and the Sharing Roast For Two with beef, pork and chicken and bottomless gravy. A large group worked through desserts including Welsh cake, rhubarb sundae and chocolate fondant, and one diner pairs the locally brewed Brains beer with the food. Staff are mostly called friendly, welcoming and quick. The recurring criticism is food that fell flat. One diner found the winter vegetable soup watery with rock hard vegetables and the honey lamb poorly prepared. Another got cold, bland food and a cold attitude from a waitress. A third found the vegetables beside the pork belly quite salty. One family celebrating a dad's 70th was given a booth and a complimentary beer.

“Our experience at The Welsh House was a major disappointment. The only positive thing about the visit was that the location was good, but everything else fell completely flat. When the meal arrived, the food was cold and had not much taste at all. it was completely bland and lacked any real flavor. To make matters worse, the waitress was not welcoming and friendly, treating us with a cold attitude that made the entire experience feel uncomfortable. A central location means nothing when both the food and the hospitality are this poor. Save your money and go somewhere else.”

“An absolutely wonderful dining experience, in the heart of Cardiff, right next to the castle. The very comfortable and extremely tastefully decorated and large interior can sit small or large dining parties. The food was fabulous. I recommend the fish pie and ploughman’s lunch. And the leek gratin was amazing. The “Brains” beer brewed locally goes very well with the food. And the staff are exceptional. They are very welcoming, knowledgeable and efficient. The best staff I have ever experienced in a restaurant of this sort. Diolch o galon !”

“We had a great lunch at The Welsh House Cardiff Restaurant & Bar. The service was friendly and very fast. We especially wanted to try some traditional Welsh food, and both dishes were excellent. The Traditional Lamb Cawl was hearty, flavorful, and full of tender lamb and vegetables. The Leek Gratin was rich, creamy, and perfectly baked with a delicious cheesy topping”

“Fantastic experience all round. Went here for my dad’s 70th, it was a last minute decision and they couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating! So glad we chose to go there. Gave us a lovely booth and very very kindly gave my dad a complimentary beer for his birthday. These are the small details and gestures which go so far and show excellent service. The food was really good, the lamb cawl was super tasty and exactly what you want on a rainy day. A special shoutout to Summer, Josie and Samira. Lovely, friendly kind staff who made my dad feel special and looked after all of us really well. Thank you.”

“A fantastic spot to experience traditional Welsh cuisine at its best! The food was excellent - full of flavour and beautifully prepared - and the drinks menu didn't disappoint either. The interior has a wonderfully traditional feel, which adds a lovely authenticity to the whole experience. The staff were young, friendly and clearly passionate about what they do. If you're looking for a genuine taste of Wales in a welcoming atmosphere, this place is absolutely worth a visit. We loved it!”
