About Ffynnon Wen
Ffynnon Wen is a pub on Thornhill Rd in Cardiff, set in a 17th-century farmhouse in Llanishen, so a meal here takes place in a building with several centuries behind it. The menu runs from fish and chips, a recurring main, to a Katsu chicken burger, and Sunday lunch is served too. Starters include buttermilk chicken strips and popcorn chicken. Staff work table service, taking orders and bringing food and drinks to the table, and the pub has a downstairs area. For parties and special occasions, the pub takes advance bookings.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers single out the friendly, welcoming staff, with one server repeatedly praised for accommodating every need and drinks topped up before glasses ran low. The food earns praise too. The Sunday lunch is called a great portion and tasty, the hunters schnitzel and bbq chicken baguette were cooked lovely, and the katsu chicken burger is described as lovely. Buttermilk chicken strips and popcorn chicken are called very tasty with just the right spice, and the chocolate brownie sundae was beautiful but very filling. Several mention a brilliant atmosphere, and one party was moved downstairs to make things easier for an aunt. Timing is the recurring complaint. One diner waited a long while for mains and was told midway that a dish was unavailable, forcing a reorder. Others mention plates left uncleared and a slow wait for dessert orders. The harshest review calls the fish and chips dry with hard batter, a mean portion and poor value, and says the desserts never arrived, so a refund was requested and granted, though only after a delay.

“Great service from Helen. I visited with four sisters after we met at the crematorium and Helen was a breath of fresh air. Chatty with a great positive attitude. Every restaurant needs a Helen.”

“Upon arriving we were greeted warmly and promptly - good start. We were not rushed to make any decisions on food or drinks which was also a positive. Timing is a great part of the whole experience 👍 When we did finally order the drinks and food they were brought with a smile and good attention to customer satisfaction. The food quality and portions were perfectly balanced. Overall a great experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“We enjoyed a pleasant mid week lunch. The food was good and we were very well looked after by the staff. Initially by a Scottish waiter before being handed over to Billie who was very helpful. She looked after us extremely well and was there when we needed her without being intrusive.”

“Terrible! So disappointing just because a wealthy area they seemed to up the price of basic food ! I've had better at a take away and chippy and that wouldnt be overcooked fish, this was good fish made dry, but batter ruined it hard as anything ! £17 just for this?! no little bit of salad on side and got a dried up wedge of lemon which I asked to change, poor excuse that "cut in morning" this was lunch time, just bad value, mean portion for this price badly presented, the dirty oil cooked the fish, a teaspoon you see in the corner of the photo was what I got, then to add to the service no puddings turned up after half hour I asked a refund got it but told have to wait till this week! And nobody cleared our plates either, and I got the tip for waiter on the invoice previous to service! checking back I'm not alone others say portions for price display on plate nil. I'll finish with it was £7 for a basic beer. NEVER AGAIN!”
