About The Travellers Rest
On Thornhill Rd in Caerphilly, The Travellers Rest is a thatched stone pub near the top of Caerphilly Mountain, licensed since 1864. The pub is open daily and pours cask ales alongside a seasonal menu of pub classics. The Pie of the Day is a regular choice, and the Sunday roast and triple cooked chips sit among the pub grub meals. Vegetarian and vegan options appear on the menu too. On colder days, an open log fire burns inside the old building. Coffee and dessert round out a visit, and a mini pudding menu covers the sweet end.

Customer Review Summary
Pie of the day draws the most mentions, with reviewers describing the ham and cheese special as fresh and flaky, and a chicken and ham hock leek pie as substantial. Close behind are the Sunday roast, where one diner calls the lamb juicy, and the surf and turf ribeye, which one reviewer rates among the best they have eaten. Others single out the Frito Misto with lemon and dill mayonnaise, a chicken burger with Korean-inspired pickles, Belgian fries, a beef brisket sandwich with triple cooked chips and the Pimms trifle. Reviewers repeatedly describe the staff as friendly and welcoming, and several mention the warm atmosphere, the open fire on colder days and a dog-friendly welcome. Vegetarian and vegan options get a mention too. The one complaint is minor: a Sunday roast diner says the greens and side dishes arrived a couple of minutes after the meat. Another reviewer, though, notes food coming out with hardly any wait. One group lunch ended with a server happily taking three group photos.

“Definitely worth the walk up the hill… or the drive if your legs are on strike. 😆 The food was phenomenal. I had the Pie of the Day (ham & cheese special), and it was fresh, flaky, and absolutely spot on. Pair it with the Belgian fries—trust me, they’re worth the upgrade. Your waistline might not thank you, but your taste buds definitely will. The chicken burger was also brilliant, especially with the Korean-inspired pickles. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavour. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel really welcome. Prices were very fair for the quality of the food and drinks. I believe it’s dog-friendly too, which is always a bonus. Honestly, if I could give more than 5 stars, I would. I’ll definitely be back! If you found my review helpful, I’d really appreciate a 👍 and a follow. It helps support my reviews and encourages me to keep sharing great places like this. Thank you!”

“We had a lovely anniversary supper here today. The Travellers Rest has always been a favourite and it's got better and better in recent years. Near the top of wild Caerphilly Mountain, thatched roof throughout, ancient stone building, open log fires in the spring, autumn and winter, lovely food, efficient, caring service. Such a contrast to the city. There's a largish carpark. The taxi fare from a north Cardiff suburb was £13.30.”

“Wow! Heard lots of good things about this place from different people over the years and finally tried it for ourselves today for the first time! I had the Frito Misto to start which was delicious! The sicilion lemon and dill mayonnaise that comes with it was so moreish! My Main course was the Surf and Turf Ribeye, which was mouthwateringly good! One of the best ribeyes I have eaten out, and I've eaten out alot! For dessert I opted for the pimms trifle! Hands down best trifle I've ever had in my life! The strawberries were so fresh! It was the perfect end to a perfect meal! My wife had the tandoori skewer for her starter and she thoroughly enjoyed it! She then had the duck breast for main and gave me a little try of that. It was so good! She also opted for the pimms trifle to end! I have no bad things to say about this place apart from they need a mixed grill on the menu! We would definitely eat here again! Darren our server was fantastic, nothing was too much work and he was great with our 3 year old son. Great sense of humour!”
