Quick info
About Old Cottage Lisvane
Old Cottage Lisvane is a whitewashed gastropub on Cherry Orchard Rd in Cardiff, with a large garden. The kitchen cooks to a Mediterranean menu, and the British half rotisserie chicken with hot honey and chicken gravy is the dish ordered most often. A lunch menu runs alongside the à la carte, and mini desserts are on offer to finish. Inside, the dining area has a wood burner and booths, including one next to the kitchen. Dogs are welcome. The pub is busiest around dinner time and quieter once the evening meal rush passes. Large groups pre-order their food ahead of time.

Customer Review Summary
The half rotisserie chicken is the dish reviewers praise most, one with hot honey and chicken gravy, another simply as the half roast chicken, though one would have liked some veg alongside. Close behind is friendly, welcoming service from staff described as helpful. Diners also single out a steak with a wonderful sauce, a chicken parfait, and mini desserts such as sorbet with fruit and rhubarb and custard. The caveats are real. The fixed price lunch drew complaints of overcooked, chewy scampi and sausages with tough skins and little mash. One diner found a cheese salad small with wilted lettuce and a kids burger bland, and had to ask for the table to be wiped and fetch their own cutlery and water. Another found the creme brulee small and not caramelised, and a booth beside the kitchen grew very hot. A few call it pricey, and one reviewer says dinner gets busy, so best to book. One couple arrived with their dog and were welcomed with a smile.

“We had excellent service from Abby who was welcoming and friendly. My wife and I were there with another close family couple, and it was the first meal we’d had there. We all chose from the fixed price lunch menu which might have been a mistake. Two of the group had scampi which was thought to be overcooked and chewy. I opted for sausage and mash which was okay, although there wasn’t much mash, and I would have liked more gravy. The sausages were tasty although the skins were tough. Overall I would describe the food we had ad no better than average. Possibly if we had chosen meals off the à la carte menu we might have come away with a different opinion.”

“An incredibly atmospheric place — I fell in love with both the place and the staff. Very pleasant style, delicious food, and a cosy atmosphere. We were welcomed with our dog with kindness and a smile. The steak was cooked very nicely, served with a wonderful sauce and side dish. I definitely recommend this place, and I would really love to come back again. Gays, thanks a lot for your kind atmosphere ❤️”

“A good pub for eating out. The menu is interesting, and the food well presented and tasty. It's a little bit pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The staff are excellent; well drilled and helpful. It can be busy around dinner time, so best to book. After dinner, it's much quieter.”

“Very small portions - £19 for a tiny cheese salad with wilted lettuce. Kids burger was very bland. Left feeling hungry. Service was non existent. I had to ask for table to be wiped down and had to get my own cutlery and water. Took a long time for food to arrive. I expected a lot more for the cost.”
