About Chestnut Tree

Chestnut Tree is a pub on Claycliffe Rd in Barnsley with an indoor Wacky Warehouse play area and a separate outdoor play area, which gives families two play spaces on site. Food orders are placed at the bar. The menu includes a mixed grill, fish and chips with mushy peas, and vegetarian lasagne with garlic bread, and breakfast is served as well. Pool and sports on the TVs give adults something to do between courses. A private area can be cordoned off for large groups, and it hosts parties such as birthdays, anniversaries and wedding receptions. A hot and cold buffet is offered for these group events.

Customer Review Summary

Private parties and large group celebrations are the clearest draw, with reviewers describing a cornered-off private area for a 50th anniversary meal, a wedding reception, and a surprise birthday buffet of hot and cold food so plentiful that guests left with boxes. Staff who decorated the room and helped with the occasion come up repeatedly in those accounts. Regulars also praise the everyday pub grub, naming the tikka, pie, and sausage and mash, and one breakfast diner found the food quick, fresh, and good value. The criticism centres on everyday food and service. One diner called the mixed grill hard and dry, with a poor steak and bitter peas, while another reported cold chips and mushy peas, and a vegetarian lasagne and garlic bread that disappointed. A family described burnt, blackened fajitas, a half-filled Coke, and too few highchairs. Others mention unfriendly bar staff, and a table of eight left with used plates uncleared for two hours until one guest carried them to the bar.

“I have eaten here many times over the last few years and have always been really pleased with the meals - it's good pub grub, I usually go for the tikka, pie, or sausage and mash - always good choices. Sarah has always been a great host and goes out of her way to make our experience enjoyable.”

“Had a surprise get together of 30 family and friends here for my partnets significant birthday. Owen and the team provided a fabulous buffet of hot and cold food. All guests said they’d never had better before.. food was freshly cooked and prepared. Delicious and so much we were sending guests home with boxes (provided by the venue FOC too) of food and also inviting other pub goers to tuck in. I only found out about the option of a private area and buffet by chance but I highly recommend the team at Chestnut Tree.. thanks all of you especially Owen & His kitchen team . You’ll definitely be my first port of call for future big birthdays 5*”

“Me and my best friend came to the chestnut for lunch today and my friend had the vegetarian lasagne and garlic bread. When it arrived and she tried it she said the garlic bread tasted funny and she didn't enjoy her lasagne. The food quality has gone downhill and we visit your establishment at least twice a week. My fish and chips were OK but the chips and mushy peas were stone cold. I don't like to complain but I like to pay good money for good food and this is not the first time we have had a bad meal. We were sat ontable 57 today. Just thought I'd bring this to your attention. Thanks in anticipation Miss Sarah Needham”

“Popped in for a cheeky breakfast while my motorbike was being serviced nearby at Road & Trials. The staff were great, food came quickly, everything was fresh and well cooked, and to top it all it was great value for money!”
